August 13, 1939-March 29, 2025
When looking at grave markers, I believe we should glance over the dates, and think about the dash. A person’s life is told within their dash. Some dashes are better than others. Each dash is filled with accomplishments and defeats, good decisions and bad, and hopefully, love, family, and friends. Cindy’s dash is an amazing one. Born in Michigan, she came to California with her parents and siblings, after graduating high school, in 1957. She worked at Food Machinery Corporation soon after her arrival. Cindy was already married when she met Leslie Charles “Chuck” Cummings during his assignment at Moffett Field Naval Air Station. Cindy eventually divorced, and Chuck’s patience paid off. They fell in love and married on January 23, 1965. After the wedding, Cindy quit FMC and became a full-time homemaker. She became pregnant and gave birth to Steven Troy Cummings on October 14, 1966. Cindy was the typical homemaker of the time. She took care of everything at home while Chuck went to work, as an electrician with IBEW 332, to provide for his family. Cindy’s week was always planned to a “T”. Monday was laundry, Tuesday was for baking, Wednesday was house cleaning, and Thursday was grocery shopping. In between all that she made time for taking care of her son. She was always there at home when Steven came home from school. Cindy had hobbies as well. She and Chuck bowled at least three times a week. Sometimes as individuals and sometimes together. Chuck and Cindy also played cards with their friends on the weekends. Chuck and Cindy travelled together as well, taking numerous cruises and other trips together. Cindy had two grandsons. Tristan Leslie Cummings, born on July 18, 1997, and Tanner Logan Cummings, born on August 9, 2003. She loved and spoiled these two with all her heart. Chuck and Cindy never missed their grandsons’ sporting events. It never mattered how hot or how cold it was outside. Cindy was also an avid San Francisco 49ers fan, and tolerated her “boys” watching San Francisco Giants’ games. Being such a huge football fan, Cindy cofounded the Couch Potatoes Fantasy Football League in 1996, and was the league commissioner up until her passing. Cindy had only the one son, so she became the adoptive mom of all of Steven’s friends. She considered all of them as one of her own, and treated them accordingly, never shying away from praising or scolding them. She helped mold boys into men. Cindy is preceded in death by her sister Jacqueline Garell. Cindy is survived by her husband of 60 years, Chuck, her brother Roy Johnson, her sister Mary Amanatullah, her son Steven, and her two grandsons, Tristan, and Tanner. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She will be missed by many. Long live the dash.
