On behalf of the Horwedel Family, we respectfully request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Joe’s memory to the two charities listed below. Joe was passionate about helping and contributing in many ways to many different non-profits, community organizations and civic efforts.

To perpetuate Joe’s memory, his Family has requested that anyone interested in helping create an ongoing legacy for Joe and the Horwedel Family to please donate either their time or financially to the Christmas in the Park effort or to the Cal Poly City and Regional Planning Department. Donations made to Cal Poly in memory of Joseph Horwedel will be used for the establishment of the Joseph Horwedel Memorial Scholarship Fund.

From Linda and the entire Horwedel Family, a heartfelt thank you.

Dear Linda, Maggie, and all of the Muchow and Horwedel families: there are no words to properly express my condolences for your great loss. How fortunate I was to begin and end my career in public service working with Joe - and in between to admire his rise in the Planning Department all while he remained true to himself and the things that are really important in life. I'll never forget him.

It was my birthday last Thursday, expected a greeting, received a farewell. Oh so young, then I again, that's how I will always remember you. Thank you Joseph for your contagious laugh and smile. Your friends will huddle around your loves.

Dear Linda and Family,
I am shocked and deeply sadden by Joe's passing. Although I haven't been a part of the City of San Jose family for a long time, I have always looked fondly upon those days with you, Joe and others as a period of great professional growth and friendship. There was a time in Joe's career where he was considered too goofy to be promoted. He prove all of them wrong. His talent for planning was piercing and undeniable. You have our deepest condolences.

Dear Linda and Maggie, We are so saddened. you are in our hearts and thoughts.

Joe was such a manager with passion who never settled with "this is what we used to do". He was a leader with vision who frequently provoked and inspired our thoughts. He was the Roger Rabbit with good heart without a single mean bone, and always was on the edge of "three strikes and I am out of here". He was a father and husband with endless love who always was proud to talk about you, and showed Maggie's drawings from his phone. He was a "wacky" great friend and a boss with Hawaiian shirt, whom I will miss dearly for a very long time.

My deepest sympathy and prayers to Joe's family and all that are grieving. I knew Joe in my City of San Jose representation work and later watched his retirement unfold in his Facebook posts. His love for his family, friends, employees he managed and the community he served was always seen as his passion and commitment. We respected and admired this humble man who always had a positive remark for the day. Rest in peace, Joe.
