Mr. Joseph Shen was born in 1935, in Dadong District in Dounan Township of Yulin County, Taiwan, where his father was the district chief during the Japanese rule. He was the first in his family to attend college. In 1961, he married Hsu-Yung (Susan) Wu, and the couple had two children, Wei-Jen (William) and Wei-Li (Dora). In 1967, he came to America in pursuit of his American dream. Turning his American dream into reality was much more difficult than expected; consequently, he often worked two jobs, sixteen hours a day, six days a week to support himself. Even though he endured much hardship, he remained optimistic, and never stopped believing that someday, America, the land of opportunity, would allow him to turn his dream into reality. After many years of struggle, he eventually became a software engineer and brought his family to America.
Joseph Shen is remembered for his love of America and his resilience. He is survived by his wife Susan, children William and Dora, granddaughters Natalie and Ashley, two brothers and two sisters in Taiwan.
