Born on August 10, 1935, in Hai Duong, a town residing in northern Vietnam, Thich was the third of seven children to the district chief, Phong Huy La, and his wife, Y Nguyen. Recognized for his intelligence and love of music, he moved to the capitol, Ha Noi as a young man to pursue advanced opportunities. He received his education at the Hanoi University of Literature, and the National Music Academy.
Thich’s journey led to a career in academics, as a literature professor at the Saigon National Music Academy, where he shared his deep appreciation for the written words with generations of students. Simultaneously, he served as a cellist of the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra. He also founded a private institution together with his brother and colleagues, where he served as the principal. It was a short-lived endeavor as the war found its way to upend life for many at that time.
The war had separated his family members for many years, but they were all blessed to be reunited later. Despite distance and time, they have never stopped supporting and loving each other from afar.
In 1972, Thich met and fell in love with Khiem Nguyen, his cellist student, blossoming into a beautiful life that lasted 46 years until she passed in 2018. They had 3 daughters, Yen, Kimmy, and Lan for whom they dedicated their lives to protect and sacrifice for a better future. His life’s purpose was complete with the arrival of his three grandchildren, Dylan, Evelyn, and Cat Vy. He and his wife resided in California for the remainder of their lives, surrounded by family, close relatives and friends.
Thich's life was adorned with a profound passion for literature, history, and classical music. It isn’t common to find one’s calling in life, much less being able to live it during a time of war. His passions brought him solace, inspiration, joy and peace throughout his life.
A celebration of Thich's life will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Lima Family Erickson Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to charities of your choice.
Thich’s departure leaves a void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him. His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit will remain eternally in our hearts.
Rest in peace, you are deeply missed and will forever be cherished.
