We sadly announce the passing of Laura Alice Simmons. She will be missed by family and friends. Laura was born and raised in San Jose, CA. She is survived by her husband Joe, her two daughters, Jennifer and Kimberley Simmons. Laura was the oldest of eight children and is survived by all but one sibling: Harold (Shannon), MaryAnne (Dennis), Alison, Nora, Joseph (Hiromi), Jim (Jennifer), Ruth (Joe), as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Laura worked for over 35 years at Comerica Bank and was respected and loved by her co-workers and superiors alike. She was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed working with children even beyond their scouting years. Laura was handy with a needle, whether it was cross-stitch or quilting. She was even known to do “surgery” on a busted teddy bear once or twice using her sewing skills.
She was an avid gardener. Laura could be found with her hands in the soil whenever the weather would allow. She made it her own personal crusade to rid the world of snails. We never discovered what the snails did to deserve Laura's wrath but they will rest safe tonight.
Laura was a breast cancer survivor with almost 10 years cancer-free before she was diagnosed a second time. She later received the devastating news that she also had pancreatic cancer, as if fighting one form of cancer wasn’t keeping her busy enough. Laura participated in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk and the Lustgarten Walk for Pancreatic Cancer. She fought like a superhero but even Superman had his Kryptonite. Laura lost her battle on March 18, 2019, surrounded by her family.
We will honor Laura's life at a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2019, St. John Vianney Church, 4600 Hyland Avenue, San Jose, CA. We welcome her family and friends to join us in celebrating a life well lived.
