Leave it to me to be unaware that Lillia had moved on....that's no surprise because, when we shared an extended classroom at Caroline Davis, she was always the one to remind me of things I forgot to do.

I only worked alongside her for 4 years but they were the best of my entire 55-year career which ended this past summer.
Without your mom/grandma/aunt, I would never have gotten that job....

I had popped into the school announced and introduced myself to Bob Guthrie who immediately introduced me to Lillia; he told me to return the next day and teach a 15-minute lesson with one of her 8th grade classes....

I did, she approved of me, and Bob trusted her so much that he hired me without even reading my resume.

She was the perfect mentor for this 26-year-old and we became partners and close friends. She was like the earth mother to our extremely young staff (Jeff Mulford, Randy Sondrno, Bill Battaglia, etc.) and we all deeply loved and respected her.

I have never known another such consummate professional who was also so warm and supportive. I was half her age but she treated me as an equal.

When I spoke and sang a song I had written for her retirement party at Zorbas (birthday?), I did it with tears in my eyes.
That was the last time I saw her but she has never been far from my mind.

Bill was the luckiest husband in America even if she did boss him around. Having her boss me around was the honor of a lifetime.
