Lucina Francisco Castaneda Magno was born on July 1, 1932, in Manila, Philippines. She was the fourth of nine children born to Elias Castaneda and Benita Francisco-Castaneda. She was particularly close to her brother, Junior, who sadly died at a very young age. She started to play violin during her grade school, even performing in front of groups, including American army personnel during World War 2. Lucy was a very active child and loved riding her bike. She suffered an accident that permanently damaged her ability to walk properly for the rest of her life. Despite this physical limitation, she continued to be active, playing volleyball, softball, and swimming in her high school and college years. This disability did not prevent Lucy from achieving her goals and plans for her life. She completed her high school and attended the University of the Philippines, receiving her bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
The legacy of Christian faith is evident in Lucina’s entire life. Her grandfather’s brother, Sixto Castaneda, was one of the founding members of the Church of the Good Shepherd. This has impacted her life as she grew in her faith and served in various church ministries. It was in this church during the 1950s that Lucy met Generoso Magno, and they were eventually married on January 1, 1956. Together, they had 7 children: Lynn “Pinky”, Grace “Geri”, Dana “Obin”, Dorcas “Kit”, Joyce “Joy”, Genesis “Bong”, and Gene “Jody” Magno.
Lucy immigrated and joined her husband, Gene, in the United States of America in 1977. The rest of the family followed and made their permanent home in San Jose, California. She worked in the electronics industry in Silicon Valley for about twenty years. It was a shift of lifestyle from being a devoted homemaker of raising her children. As the family became bigger, Lucy became a grandmother of 16 and a great-grandmother of 4. A role she had the most success and satisfaction.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gene, who passed away in June of 1999, and by her siblings: Junior, Samuel, Amelia, Lydia, Dely, and Jimmy; and her great-grandson, Nathan.
She is survived by her 7 Children, 16 Grandchildren Janine, Joses, Jill, TJ, Josiah, Noah, Dani, Cassandra, Clarisse, Celeste, Paul, Jenna, Eli, Lucas, Jordan, Rain and Great grandchildren Maddie, Colin, Vida, and Isa. She is also survived by her siblings, Cesar and Amor.
Lucy leaves behind a legacy of virtuous motherhood, a gentle, kind and dignified character. Most of all, a legacy of unwavering faith to the one who is the lover of her soul.
Well Done, Nanay Lucy!
We all look forward to seeing you again in Heaven.
