Biography

Luisa Contreras was born in Aguililla, Michoacán, Mexico on May 6 12, 1923. She was one of ten children born to Honorato Vasquez and Inez Larios. As a child, Luisa loved to horseback ride and attend church with her siblings, Jesus, Ramon, Rosa, Honorato, Consuelo, Elvira, Maria, Custodio, Jose and Teresa.

On December 2, 1940, this outgoing, common-sense thinking young lady married Jose E. Contreras at the Coalcoman Church in Coalcoman, Michoacán. Together, they were the parents of twelve children: Chuy, Manuel, Lupita, Jose, Teresa, Gil, Inez, Jorge, Beatriz, Rosa, Luisa and Angelica. Luisa and Jose were delighted when the time came for their children to have children, and they were devoted Grandparents. Luisa loved to make a nice, comfortable home for her husband and family. She was accomplished at crocheting and ceramics and she loved to garden.

Together, Luisa and Jose enjoyed travel and they visited Hawaii, Cancun, Zihuatanejo, Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti, the Cayman Islands, Huatulco, San Antonio, Oklahoma, Idaho, the Oregon coast and Canada.

Luisa was a devoted member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in San Jose, where she was an active member of the Guadalupana Society, the Encuentro Matrimonial and Cursillo. As a Guadalupana, she devoted many hours to organizing and volunteering at events to raise money for her parish. She participated in prayer circles and helped to organize masses for the sick and serve at the meals provided afterward. In every way, Luisa exemplified what it meant to be a faithful Catholic and to provide service to her worship community, family and friends.

Luisa passed away on February 26, 2018 at her home in San Jose, after fighting a brave battle against cancer. Her funeral mass was held at her beloved Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and she was laid to rest in Calvary Catholic Cemetery at San Jose, California, on March 7, 2018.
