Ann was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Born in Melrose, Iowa in 1937, she was the youngest of three siblings. Ann leaves a legacy of faith and love and her presence will be deeply missed by her family and all those who knew her.
She attended St. Mary’s grammar and high school in Ottumwa, Iowa. She graduated from Marycrest College with a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry. In 1960, she met her husband, Dick, in Palm Springs during a Catholic Alumni event and was married in 1961. Ann and Dick reared their family in La Canada, California where she was an active member of St. Bede’s Parish. In 1999, she and her husband moved to San Jose and were members of St. Christopher Parish with Ann later joining St. Martin of Tours Parish.
When her children were young she founded the St. Bede’s Parish enrichment program. Using her Chemistry degree, she taught science to seventh and eighth graders and instituted the annual Science Fair.
While raising their four daughters, Ann attended law school part-time and was admitted to the California Bar in 1976. While practicing law for 35 years, she initially practiced with Griffin Redmond and Wu and went on to open her own private practice. In 1991 Ann became a Certified Specialist in Immigration and Nationality Law and was named in the Bar Register of Preeminent lawyers.
Always a leader, Ann served as President of the St. Bede's Parish Council of Women, Vice President of the Archdiocesan Council of Women, President of the Newcomers Club and President of the Pastoral Council of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Ann also introduced the Alpha program to St. Christopher Parish.
Music has always been an important part of Ann’s life. She began singing in choirs in elementary school and studied voice and was a soloist during her college and post-college years. She also played viola in orchestras and quartets. Her music was her ministry; she directed the St. Bede’s Church choir for ten years and continued to bring music into the lives of those around her throughout her adult life.
Ann died peacefully on Friday, February 28, 2025 at her daughter’s home surrounded by family. She is preceded in death by her husband Dick Redmond, parents Lucille and Al Bergquist, her brothers Bill and John, and three grandchildren: James and CJ Evans and Veronica Hoffmann. She will be missed by her four daughters, Mary Kay Redmond (John Duffy), Patty Evans (Ken), Peggy Blach (Don), and Christina Hoffmann (John), her 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
