The earliest memories I had of my mom, NguyễnThị My, were her on-call nights at Vietnam Republic Hospital (Nhà Thương Cộng Hoà) in Saigon. My mom worked in the Ear-Nose-Throat department to receive wounded soldiers being air-lifted by the Huey helicopters from frontlines for emergency treatments during Vietnam war. I volunteered most of the time to be on-calls with her.
I remembered how hectic every time helicopters landed in the back lawn of the hospital. Soldiers with head and neck wounds were carried to her department for temporary bleeding control. My mom carried pocket full of hemostats and tourniquets to slow down or stop the bleeding. I observed her courageous action and compassionate duties through a window of her call-room feet away from soldiers lying all over the hallways and eves of the hospital. Sometimes, mom slipped over puddles of blood and fell flat on her back but she always determined to get back up, pushing through the chaos to get to the next patient.
In the 1950’s, my father suffered a lumbar vertebra fracture while playing volleyball, resulting in chronic, recurrent infections. Orthopedic surgery could not contain infections with surgeries and antibiotics. Applying what she had learned with poly-antibiotic therapy (1950 & 1951) treating TB & dental infection, she cured my father illness with triple IV antibiotics—penicillin, erythromycin, and gentamicin. I recalled as she drained his abscesses, pus splashed 6 feet away.
My mother worked hard all her life, raising her family and taking care of everyone’s health, including patients, friends, and neighbors. She had a big, warm heart and great capacity of love and giving. My mother sacrificed her youth to raise 3 children from her first husband, who had passed away during 1954 Vietnam civil war migration from North to South, and 4 more children with my father. Mom, you’ll be missed by everyone, especially your children. Your duties are done. PLEASE HAPPILY REST IN PEACE.
