A previous resident of Livermore, California, he was born on Dec. 18, 1925, in Fremont, Ohio, and was the eldest and last surviving of three children. He graduated from Fremont Ross High School in Fremont, Ohio, in 1944, and served in the Air Force from 1944 to 1952 (tail gunner). He was stationed in Japan after the war and toured the devastated city of Hiroshima in Dec. 1945. He crossed the International Date Line heading west on his 20th birthday, the shortest birthday he had ever had.
He met his future wife, Norma (yes, Norma) at a skating rink in Tiffin, Ohio, and married on July 20, 1947, in Fremont, Ohio. In 1954, Norman got several job offers in California while visiting family there. He accepted a position as a machinist at Lockheed in Burbank, California. They moved with their first child, a son, Michael, to California in 1954, and worked as a machinist for nearly 45 years at Lockheed in Palo Alto and then later in Sunnyvale, California. In 1994, Norman and Norma moved to Livermore, California.
Before retiring, Norman spent several years in the US Army Reserves. Norman lost his wife, Norma, to Parkinson’s disease in December 2013. Norman has outlived his parents and siblings. His three children are Michael, Charlene, and Keith; three granddaughters, Susan, Tiffany and Zoey; two great-granddaughters, Haley and Taylor.
Mr. Feighner’s talents included carpentry, electrical, automotive maintenance and bricklaying; his hobbies were hunting and fishing, and “at 100” still enjoyed going to the casino.
Norman spent his final days at Arbor Place in Lodi, California.
