Otilla was born in Maya, Daanbantayan, Cebu, Philippines, on December 13, 1932. She received her Elementary Teacher’s Certificate in Home Economics and her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of the Visayas, Cebu City, Philippines.
She married Generoso Acacio Juan on April 14, 1963 and enjoyed 55 wonderful years together until his passing in 2017. They spent the early years of their marriage as expatriates in Afghanistan where their two children were born and their later years in San Jose, California.
In her first career as a teacher for 16 years in Afghanistan within the expatriate international community, Otilla taught elementary school at the Michelangelo Italian International School in Kabul, the American Community School of Lash-kar-Gah, and home-schooled expatriate children in Kandahar taking Calvert overseas courses from the United States. She left her second career as a manufacturing quality control inspector in Silicon Valley after 17 years to enjoy retirement and gardening with her husband.
A deeply spiritual and devoted Roman Catholic, Otilla prayed daily to our Mother of Perpetual Help as her way of spreading God’s celestial light of love, peace, and harmony out into the world. Her private and humble daily devotional petitions of divine love was her gift to those that she loved, her family, her community, and humanity overall.
Otilla is survived by her daughter, Abigail Diaz Juan, and other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and her son, Ferdinand.
