I'm sitting with Manny and Ruben. He's pushing us back and forth in an old wooden rocking chair; It's the kind of chair that makes you think of nursery rhymes and magical characters, and to me, my Papa Ramon was very much like a character out of a fairytale. He was larger than life –tall and strong, but with a gentleness that made you feel safe and protected. He loved to sing and dance; he exuded joy and always lived with a youthful spirit. I can still hear Apa's voice; he is singing to us -a Spanish child's song about a mischievous rabbit. I can still hear his voice and the boisterous laughter that follows the song's punch line. I can still hear his voice -the way it sounded that day and every year when he called to sing to me on my birthday. His 6:00 am rendition of Las mananitas will forever be my favorite part of childhood birthdays. It's one of many things that I miss about him. He had this way of greeting you like you were a lottery ticket. He'd shout, “Ay Hija” or “Ay Hijo”... “I love you too much!” He was proud of us –as a family and as individuals. We were his ‘gusto'. He often said 'echale ganas', usually referring to school, but he really wanted us to be the best we could in life. He wanted us to succeed, and he was the ultimate example for how hard work pays off. Apa lived a good life –I won't say perfect, because what life is perfect? But his life had love, passion, and God. He wanted the best for his family. He loved us fiercely with honesty and constancy. I've learned from him that being good doesn't mean being perfect, but It means learning from your mistakes and valuing the opportunities you are given to do good. We love you. We miss you. We won't ever forget you.
