

Ray Yoshio Shiomoto passed away at his home in Campbell, CA on February 13, 2016. He was born on April 22, 1932 in San Jose, CA. He was 83 years old. He fought a long battle with cancer and was taken care of by his loving children and the compassionate caregivers at Santa Clara Hospice.
Ray is preceded in death by his loving wife of forty nine years, Lois Shiomoto, his parents Saichi Shiomoto and Kazuyo (Yoichizoko) Shiomoto, and brothers, Sam and Mitch Shiomoto, and sister, Alice Kawaoka. Ray is survived by his sister, Margaret Nomura, and his children, Lee Shiomoto of Fontana, CA, Greg Shiomoto, San Jose, CA and Ann Thornburgh of Carmel Valley, CA, and six grandchildren, Dannielle, Samantha, Brandon, Maddilynn Shiomoto and Grant and Duke Thornburgh.
Ray grew up in Santa Clara County. During World War II, Ray's family, along with other people of Japanese descent, were mandated to leave California. Ray's family went to Sandy, Utah. After the War ended, his family returned to California to continue farming. Ray graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1949. He went on the earn a certificate from Heald School of Business in 1951. Ray joined the Army in 1952 and served for two years during the Korean War. He was the recipient of the United Nations Service Award, the National Defense Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. He was discharged in 1954 achieving the rank of private.
After serving in the Army, Ray came back home to Santa Clara and met his wife, Lois. They had three children, Lee, Greg and Ann. He began work as a self employed gardener, working for sixty years. Ray enjoyed time with his family and friends, fishing, camping, growing fruits and vegetables, cooking and watching his favorite sports teams. A private funeral was held at the San Jose Buddhist Church on February 27, 2016.
