Ritaben although you can't be here with us, we are truly not apart. You will always be living in our hearts and in the soul of our grandchildren.

Dear Mom,

JJSG! I still remember the very first time we met 14 years ago. You came to New Jersey to give your blessings for my relationship with Ekta. I was extremely nervous knowing I was meeting my future Mother-In-Law for the first time, but it didn't take long for me to feel at ease due to your friendly and warm nature. 

There were ups and downs throughout the years and that is given with any relationship, but one thing I will forever be grateful for is the support and unconditional love you provided Ekta and I in all our major milestones - buying our very first house and helping us settle in, hosting parties, moving to different states, and most important bringing Aarav into this world.

Before you would come to stay with us, Ekta and I would always make a list of all the places we would want to take you to eat at 
because we knew how food always brought you so much happiness. Conversations would be something like "We'll take Mom to Torchy's so she can try their tacos, we'll go to Aahar so she can have Dosas, we'll take her to Salt and Straw for ice cream... seeing  how happy you got trying new food brought us a lot of joy.

I am glad Ekta and I sent Aarav to California for a month every year, during his early childhood years, so he can spend quality time with you and Dad. The memories that you created with Aarav during that time will forever be etched in his heart. Aarav's early childhood years were filled with happiness through your unconditional love and delicious home-cooked meals. 

You have taught us so many life lessons, showed us the true meaning of life and where happiness truly lies. We will continue to carry forward everything you taught us and make you proud. Don't worry about Dad, we promise to take very good care of him and will always encourage him to live his life through both his and your eyes.

We know without a doubt you will continue to bless us every step of the way. We love you Mom!

Rita Desai, a friend ,bhabhi, best person to share secrets, converse on topics n gossip too.We started our journey to  happy married life  on the same day and very often we discussed matters even though seven seas apart. She loved to cook n try new recipes . Always helpful to one n every n she loved shopping ,movies n playing cards.  Though she parted  early than her age ,left an unreplaceable void in my life  I will always cherish her memories n pray fr her soul to be happy n  her everlasting smile  shall never fade.🙏🏻

I am so grateful you have been a part of my life since my childhood. I have very fond memories growing up with you all these years…

Mom still reminds me of the times you made us kids sit in a line during meals, and no one was allowed to get up until our plates were wiped clean.  Some of us were picky eaters, but you never gave us options, we always had to eat what was made for all. (Sorry, but I still don’t like Dhan Shaak!) I remember being afraid of showing you my nails, as I always bit them down to the skin. I remember you scolding me, but behind that voice was always a smile and a warm loving heart.

I always came to your home with an appetite, because you made the most delicious meals. Mexican, Punjabi, Italian, you name it, there was never a time your kitchen was closed. I looked forward to sleepovers and late night movies at your home, as we all lined up our sleeping bags in your living room. You always welcomed me into your home and made me feel like I was another daughter to you. You never held back on showering your love on me. 

I remember having countless conversations with you as I entered my college years. You were so optimistic, understanding, and full of life, you always told us to enjoy this time, as it will not come back.  You have been there for both Vishal and I from the start of our relationship. We are so grateful for your support and love throughout. Even Swara was blessed to spend time with you during your visits to Irvine. Can you believe Swara’s first trip to Disneyland was with you! 

Auntie, thank you so much for being a part of my life. Thank you for teaching me how to organize my home, how to cook amazing meals, and thank you for giving me a wonderful childhood and beautiful memories to cherish the rest of my life. You presence will truly be missed, but the lessons you have taught us will pass onto generations to come…

Miss you a lot. You and kaka accepted me into your family and help me become what I am today. I have so many fond memories of you that will be cherished. You always guided me to the right path when I had doubts. “Food” – your cooked meals were delicious and the spirit with which you would feed everyone is what made every meal with you special. You were a mentor and someone who made us feel like we are not alone here with all your love and support. You were like a mother to us and we will miss your scoldings the most. Aemi misses the long gardening discussions and of course the cleaning tips. Aaria and Ayana still remember you sharing the seashells with them and the love you showed towards them. We have lost a lot more then words can express.

Dear Nani,

You hopped on a plane to go to Je Je Bhagvan's place and it will take you many many flights to reach there.  Not sure how true this is but this is what my Mamma and Papa told me every time I would ask where you were. No matter what the truth is, one thing I know for sure is you may be far away from me but I know you are always watching over me and will always be in my heart.  

You always expressed your happiness to everyone about my empathetic and jovial nature as a kid. Guess what Nani...I haven't changed one bit! I am still the same kid you were always very proud of. 

I got to spend a lot of quality time with you and Nana every year when you were here with us, and the times we were together would always be my favorite. I will never forget the day you and I spent several hours at Chuck E' Cheese and collected over 1000 tickets to get prizes. I will never forget our dates to Taco Bell where we both would eat our favorite item 'Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes.' I will never forget the excitement we shared when you took me on my very fest bus ride in Seattle. 

I had a special bond with you like no other. You were strict with me when I needed to be disciplined, but you never held back in showering me with your unconditional love. You made my early childhood years very very special. You have left behind so many wonderful memories that I will always look back on and cherish forever and you have left beautiful little traces of yourself in my soul which will be with me forever. 

Nani, I promise to continue to make you proud of me the way I always have and I promise to always look after Nana and keep a smile on his face.

I have so many fond memories with Rita Fai. After my parents came to the US, my parents and Fai and Fua bought houses next to each other. Our families grew up close, Fai has always been like a second mom to Anuja and I. 

When I was young, I was a really picky eater. I remember Fai not giving me options and making me eat what was available. I also remember her feeding me the food I didn't like and with every bite she would ask me to imagine eating all the foods I did like. 
Growing up our two families always had dinners together every night and took vacations together. The older we got the dinners together got harder, so we had to separate our dinners, this was hard. I remember eating dinner at home and then going to Fai and Fua’s house to talk and if I saw Fai made something I liked I would eat a second dinner. 

Even after I got married and moved to Maryland Fai never forgot how much I loved Dhan Shak and Badam no Sero. The day Fai found out I was pregnant, and my parents were coming a few months later she made both Dhan Shak and Badam no Sero and asked them to give it to me. I will never forget that. 

Even though we were far apart I was always able to talk to Fai. I would call sometimes driving home for work and would talk to her for 30 minutes and I never realized where the time went. 
We miss you Fai and we love you. 

Dear Nani, 

I only got five short months with you, but I’m glad I got that. Even though we didn’t get to spend too much time together, our connection goes a lot deeper. We are both August babies and only 20 days apart! My mumma says I’m a little firecracker – just like you! But most importantly, she decided to give me your name. So, I have the honor of carrying a big part of you - with me - for the rest of my life. 

I know I will hear endless stories about your amazing food, your grand parties, your passion for arts and crafts, and your love of shopping. I’ll hear about your fiery and bold personality. I’ll also hear about your courage, strength, and immense will power. But I will mostly hear about your selfless nature and warm personality. It seems like you were one amazing lady and I’ll have big shoes to fill. As will my mom. 

I’ve been told that I came into this world during a time when I was needed the most. I brought light in a time of darkness. I’m glad I was able to bring joy during a very difficult phase in your life. I’m grateful you were at least able to hold me when you were too weak to hold your other grandchildren. And I’m truly humbled by the whole-hearted smile on your face with each photograph that was captured of us together. 

I may not have direct memories of you Nani, but I feel like I will always know you. I love you!

Dearest Nani, 

I’m only four years old, so I may not understand a lot of things. My mumma tells me Jai Jai Bhagvan called you to his home. Actually a lot of people are telling me different things, so I’m a little confused. I’ve been told Bhagvan took you on a plane. I’ve also heard you and Bhagvan are flying above us in the sky. Despite everything I’ve heard, I’d like to believe you shot up into the sky using your rocket boosters like Buzz Lightyear! 

In my four years of life, I have been blessed to make many memories with you. You gave me my very first bath, and you were the one that got me hooked onto Wheels on the Bus. You gave me my very first cooking lesson by teaching me how to make chaa and I even got to bake fun-fetti cupcakes with you! Also, I had the honor of sitting next to you on almost every ride during my very first visit to Disneyland. (Sorry Nana!) You were always very special to me, Nani. In fact, you were my favorite. Shhhh…

My mumma tells me there was one time where I cried for you when I spotted you through the window at the Mandir. You were volunteering in the kitchen and I was being carried away. I didn’t want to be separated from you. My mumma thinks I have a strong intuition, just like her, and she felt it’s as if I knew you were being taken away from me. 

Last year when we moved to San Jose, I saw a different version of you. I wanted to help you. So, I offered you water and brought you your mangos. I often stood by your side as you slowly walked across the room. But, as I saw you weaken and get quieter, I started to withdraw. I’m sorry. I didn’t understand what was happening to you. I still don’t understand. Maybe someday my mumma will tell me what happened to you and why Jai Jai Bhagvan called you to his home. 

For now, I want you to know I’ll always cherish all the memories we made together and I truly miss your bear hugs. Oh, and no one sings Mara Shreenathji quite like the way you do…not even mumma. I love you!

Pooja, Dhruv, Alyssa and I are very fortunate for all the great memories we’ve built together with you. From our college days to our Irvine days, you have always been an inspiration on how to persevere through adversity and enjoy life in the moment with big parties, warm heart and amazing food! 

It brings me a lot of joy looking at pictures and videos of you and Dhruv at the temple or in the kitchen making chai or at Disneyland or at the Gilroy house that you and Manoj-dad built with so much love. We are blessed that Dhruv got to spend so much time with his Nani growing up and for all of your help and support in our early parental years. 

We are also very fortunate that we had an opportunity to move back to SJ and you got to meet and bond with Alyssa in her first few months of life. It looks like Alyssa has your personality and nature and will continue to remind us of Nani as she grows up!

Lastly, Pooja and I are thankful for all the sacrifices you and Manoj-dad made to help create a better future for us and the grandchildren. We will take these lessons and pass them on to Dhruv and Alyssa in your memory and pray that you continue to bless us all from above. We miss you everyday and we promise to take good care of Nana!

Fai and I have always shared a special bond. I've been told that besides all the baby talk, my first real word was "Rita." 

Our families are very close; we were neighbors. Growing up our families ate dinner together every night. I always looked forward to the dinners and conversations. The day our families decided to have separate kitchens because of our schedules was a sad day. I'm pretty sure we all cried. 

Whenever my mom asked me to drop something off to Fai's house I would say be back in 5 minutes. Twenty minutes later I would still be talking.  Some of the best conversations I've had with Fai have been hanging halfway outside 3590 Ivalynn Circle. 

Fai was like a second mom to me and I've learned so much from her, but the lesson that stands out most was over an afternoon shopping trip for my 16th birthday. I pulled out a cute skirt. Fai told me I should get it, but coming from a semi-conservative family I said it was short and wondered what would mom think. I remember her saying, "You're only going to be 16 once, so you might as well enjoy it." What an amazing philosophy to live life by. I did end up buying the skirt and continued to enjoy each phase of life and never let an opportunity pass me by. 

The last 10 months have been full of ups and downs. But through it all I witnessed Fai's never ending strength, courage, love and faith. Fai use to always say "maro haath barabar Anuja par faryo che." Growing up I thought, yes we are alike. She loves shopping, cooking, arts & crafts, and so do I. About a month ago when I visited her in the hospital, we reminisced about good memories and family vacations among other things. Again at the end of the conversation Fai mentioned "maro haath barabar Anuja par faryo che." I wasn't quite sure how to process it that day, but as I think back on it today...I would be blessed to have half of the strength, courage, love & faith Fai has shown in these last 10 months. Fai, you will forever be in my heart. Miss you & love you. 

Rita, came into my life on Oct 7th 1979 via the traditional arranged Hindu marriage system and that connection grew into a beautiful family and lots of memories that encompass the next 40 years.

December 1984, she gave birth to Ekta and in 14 months to Pooja in February 1986. In June 1986, we moved into what would become our home for the next 30 years on Ivalynn Circle next to Ajay/Shilpa and their two daughters Anuja and Sheetal. Rita helped raise, educate and get both Ekta and Pooja married in our San Jose home. All along she made sure, both girls grew up with moral, ethical, religious and family values. Being close to brother’s family also helped solidify these values. Along the way, I may have had my differences with Rita, however her love, dedication and faith always prevailed.

In May 2016 we moved from San Jose to Gilroy and then and only then she started exercising her true passion of art, decoration, music and devotion towards the community. Gilroy home was the lifelong dream that we kept putting away in our earlier years for one reason or another. When we finally decided on the home, she had an opportunity to personalize each and every aspect of the new home, Rita truly made it her own. She really enjoyed hosting family and friends and most importantly, our Grand children’s. Nothing brought us more happiness than watching the grand kiddos run around in the home that we built together.

The life we had envisioned into retirement took a very different turn in March of 2019. Her turbo charged strength and bubbly nature was shortened due to the advanced cancer diagnosis. She admired the love, respect and support from family and friends along the way. On the morning of Jan 26 2020, my better half took her last breath when she passed peacefully in her sleep in our home surrounded by her loved ones.

Rita my forever sweet heart, Meri Jaan, we pray to God to give your soul peace and give us strength and endurance to take care of our kids and grandkids.

Let me tell you about three specific things I, and really we all, love about her....

Related to her warm heart, she is so fun loving and big hearted. She could talk to me for hours.... she was always generous with her time.

Everyone knows her passion to cook and feed. As one example, Rita, for our daughter Lisa’s first birthday party cooked 200 samosas in San Jose and sent them to me cross country in Pittsburgh. They were an absolute hit in the party!

Also, we had a great opportunity to shop with her in India in Santacruz. She was so organized in the chaos. It was the very best time with Rita and my whole family - Jitu, Monica and Lisa.

Rita, in your life you touched so many and in your death many lives are changed.

You will be surely missed for your magnetic smile and your friendly advice on any subject. 

You will always be in our hearts because in there you still are alive.

Rita, no words are enough to express the void u dear sister have left in our hearts. I know they say time heals but will miss u always. Its not that I spoke to u every week bit I knew u were there with us always. 

My whole family is in USA but to be in that country and not see u is not acceptable. We all are putting up a tough fight but all of us miss u wholeheartedly. 

Rita, you will always be remembered for your love, food and generosity. While growing up we were different in all our choices but then also we knew what both of us liked. 

I know u are at a better place now  but still would love to have u among us. Endless memories will be with us forever.

Rita, it seems like you were with me just yesterday and we were talking to each other about courage. Suddenly death took you so far away from us and left us with memories and your face in a picture frame. 

I still remember the day when I first met Rita. She had come to my place to see me indirectly for her brother, Ajay. We had never met before, but we talked like we had known each other for years.  As we were talking I found out that she lived on the way to my class. We left together walking and talking. Soon we reached Rita's house and she said my destination is here and from here you will have to continue your journey. After 40 years of companionship, you left me and went to your destination. 

Rita was very strong minded and hard working . Even after being diagnosed with cancer she never lost faith in God and fought like a soldier, a true fighter. Rita, told me to narrate the speech and share her experience without becoming emotional, and that is what I am trying to do. 

During the last two days, we stayed with her and she demonstrated through her expressions her experience of facing death. She was with us but not with us. Her soul had already begun the journey.  She did not want to eat or drink anything. Her throat was drying up but didn't want to drink. When I told her this is Gangajal (Holy water) she opened her mouth and took few drops. She refused to take food but when I gave her Charnamurt (holy sand) she opened her mouth and put it on her tongue. She was short of breath and we were all chanting bhajans and the environment was holy and inside she was experiencing the merging of her soul into God. 

Rita, I tried my best to fulfill your wish describing the end of your journey. Today, you are not physically with us, but the years we have spent together, the strength, and love will never be forgotten. You will always stay in our heart. 

May your soul rest in peace and from the bottom of my heart, I will really miss you.

We bought Manoj and Rita’s home in San Jose and we were so happy that the couple had 2 kids and raised them and got them married in that house. We were a newly married couple and were very excited to buy our first home in which Manoj and Rita lived happily. Rita and Shilpa aunty are like our extended family and we have had couple of gatherings in our house and theirs and all we remember is great food and great company. The parties rolled with laughter and fond memories of traveling to Mumbai. Rita aunty’s sense of dressing and decorating the house is something out of the ordinary. Rita you are free from pain & suffering with god's blessing. Your memories with our both kids wedding events and creativity. Everyone had praised your work and making events beautiful at home as well as event location. 

Back in our early days in Bay Area, we use to meet with you and Dipti. I also learn Dhansak from you and till this day when I prepare remember you. Thank you. 

Last year when I learn about your health it was very sad but when I get your progress from Prerana, it felt good. I wish that, we had opportunity to spend some time.

Dearest Mom, 

When we met with your palliative care Dr.  she asked you a very important question..."Mrs. Desai what is your legacy?" That was a lot for you to digest after being told you are no longer responding to treatment. However, that question got me thinking – what would you like to pass on? What made you truly happy? What can we learn from you?
 
I immediately knew the answer to those questions. Your one true love and passion was - FOOD.  You loved to eat, but loved to feed others even more. You not only fed bellies, you fed souls. You and Mami cooked for our "joint family" for over 20 years. You volunteered your time at the kitchen in the mandir because that’s where they needed the most help, and how can I forget the endless parties that you hosted! 

I didn’t quite share the same passion growing up. Constantly indulging in the best foods and being surrounded by your energy and passion, I knew I had big shoes to fill. I tried, but was never truly interested in cooking. Once I moved to Irvine I started taking more initiative, because for the first time in my life I moved away from you. It also gave me a good excuse to call you several times a day asking you silly questions – "What goes in the vagaar again? How much water should I add when cooking the daal?" My questions were often addressed with ridiculous responses -  "Add a little bit, but not too much. Squeeze the potato between your fingers, if it breaks easily – it’s done." Never mind if that method may burn your fingers.

So, 10 months ago when you were first diagnosed with cancer, all our lives shattered. For the first time in my life, I got a chance to cook for you. Hearing you criticize my food was like music to my ears, because I had a lot to learn and I still do. I’ll miss your food mom, I’ll miss you. The kitchen won’t be the same without you; life won’t be the same without you. But, watching you suffer was a lot harder than letting you go. I’m sure god is enjoying your samosas up there! Love you

Dear Mom,

    You had so many beautiful qualities that touched many hearts and impacted so many lives. If there are two qualities that really brought joy to your soul and that we all can carry forward is your selflessness and simplicity.

    Throughout your life you continued to serve and care for others. Your interest in arts and crafts led you to do decorations for all kinds of events for family and friends. 
    What started off as an interest quickly turned into a hobby, that you were passionate about, and years later turned into a business that many of us pushed you to start. We quickly realized the business aspect was never important for you. You always taught us whatever you do, you do it from the heart and you do it because it makes you happy. Serving others by doing something you are passionate about always made you happy.

    You never had a bucket list that you felt the need to check-off.  Simple things brought joy to your life. 
    Growing up Friday nights were hindi movie nights with the family. Every summer we would pack our bags and head to Lake Tahoe to spend a memorable week at a cabin. We would play cards, watch movies, enjoy home cooked meals, watch sunsets at the lake every evening...we had the best time. 
    While most people would want a party for their milestone birthday or take a trip, for your 50th birthday all you wanted was dinner at your favorite restaurant (Pedro's) with your family. You never looked back in your life with any regrets or that you missed out on anything.

   Mom, your selflessness and simplicity has touched many hearts and has been your greatest attribute that will always be remembered. You have taught us all what is important in life and have left us with endless memories that we will cherish forever. You will forever be remembered, we will celebrate the life you lived, the love you shared and the difference you made in all our lives. 

I LOVE YOU MOM!

We have know Rita for 30 years and have many good memories with her.  She has always been a part of all our events.  We have done some road trips with her which were very memorable.  
I (Manisha) really had a good time on our girls trip in India and she always looking forward to another one.  
She was very generous, kind and helpful to us at all times.  


My favorite memories of Rita Auntie was being able to spend time with her when we were in India for Archish's and Pooja's wedding and to be able to see how much she loved her daughters and her entire family was amazing. We will miss her.

My memories with Rita, last 20 years always met at Atul and Manisha house, where we enjoyed glass of wine together. 
I have used her center peace Elephant for my daughter wedding. Recently last GM few years we BA am every close and planning girls trip when she was turning 60 this years. She will be missed dearly.
