Rosalind Intrieri, known as Ro or Rosalind to family and Roz to everyone else, was born on January 20, 1928 in Vandergrift, PA, the youngest of 11 children of Italian immigrant parents. As a child she had tuberculosis and went to school with a brace on her leg, which left her with a trademark limp for her entire life.
After growing up in Vandergrift, she attended two years of college at the University of Pittsburgh. By then some of the siblings had moved to Sunnyvale, CA, and she and her mom and dad (Nana and Papa) joined them. She received a Secretarial Diploma from Heald’s Business College in San Jose, CA.
Her son Chuck was born in 1952. His father died two months before he was born so she raised him as a single mom for the next seven years with help from her brother Louie, sisters Stella and Irene and her parents. It was during this time that she began her Civil Service career as an Administrative Assistant – a career that would span over 50 years.
In 1959 she married Roy LeFevre and began a fairy tale love affair that lasted 58 years. They were rarely out of each other’s sight during that time. Roy adopted her son Chuck and in 1960 they had daughter Terry. That same year Roy was transferred to the east coast. They spent two years in Virginia Beach, VA and two years in Charleston, SC. Roy then retired from the Navy and got a job in Silver Spring, MD outside of Washington DC. While there, they had many visits from family members who wanted to see the nation’s capital. Roz would plan a tour of all the must-see sights for anyone who visited.
In 1966, Roz got word that her mom was not doing well and urged Roy to find a job in California. They moved to Milpitas that summer and she resumed her career at Moffett Field. She ended her career at NASA in Sunnyvale, but this would not be the first time; she “retired” several times. From the time they moved back to the west coast, they played host and tour guide again to many members of the east coast family that came to visit and see California.
Roz and Roy loved to travel. They traveled the country, often the west coast representatives at east coast weddings and funerals. Weekend trips to Tahoe and Reno were a regular occurrence. They traveled to Alaska to visit Chuck and his family and toured the state. When Chuck moved to Seattle, they made several trips there – including all the weddings, high school and college graduations and other major family events. She and Roy also took her sister Eleanor to Italy.
Roz and Roy were very close with their daughter Terry and son-in-law Joe. They talked frequently by phone and saw each other in person at least once a week, and regularly went out for dinner. As they got older, Terry and Joe oversaw their care, as did Sita, the Angel sent from heaven who took great care of Roz in her final years.
Roz is survived by her sister Anita, son Chuck (Christine), daughter Terry (Joe), grandchildren Tina, Shelley, Stephanie, Alisha, Adam and Heather and 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father Pasquale, mother Francesca, sisters Mary, Stella, Sister Joan, Irene, Clementine, Eleanor, and brothers Louie, Jimmy and Albert.
