Sumiko Ichinaga passed away peacefully on January 11, 2021 at the age of 91. Sumi was born on February 26, 1929 to Kyutaro and Koharu Okayama. After internment at Tule Lake, the family settled in Aromas, CA. She attended an all girls high school in San Francisco with hopes of attending nursing school but instead returned home to help farm with the family. In 1949, she was introduced to Robert at a dance by Robert's sister, Laura Hanamoto. They were married at the San Jose Buddhist Church in 1951 and were apparently the first couple to kiss as part of the wedding ceremony. They had a wonderful marriage until his death in 2002. She is survived by her children Susan (Kerry Tajii), Randy, Mike, Wes (Chieko), Joe (Rosa) and Lisa (Scott Ichikawa), 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, and her siblings Hisayo, Betty, Ron, Tom, Midori, Shoichi, and Lilly, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband Robert, and siblings Kazumi Nakasaki and Reiko Masuda. Sumi was a generous and caring person who loved to garden, cook and cheer on the SF Giants and 49ers. She will be missed by all who knew her. A private service will be held at a later date.
