Yuriko (Yuri) Misawa was born on August 14, 1928 and passed peacefully on March 12, 2025. She was raised in Haiku, Maui and attended the original Maui High School, located in nearby Hamakuapoko. From 1946, Yuriko was a bookkeeper for seven years at the Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company, where she met her husband Naoki, a WWII veteran who returned to Maui after his military service overseas with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Their loyal and loving marriage lasted 57 years, enabling them to enjoy international travel and vacations together throughout their working years and retirement.
After they moved to California, Yuri worked for the City of San Jose for 30 years, ultimately serving in the assessor's office. She remained busy in retirement, offering volunteer work at the Yu-Ai-Kai senior center, the Kirk community center, and the San Jose Historical Museum. Her appreciation for plants and gardening was always evident in the greenery that populated her home and backyard.
