Aunque no llegó a grabar ni desarrolló un repetorio original, el grupo Los Thundersmereció el reconocimiento de los más avezados conocedores que lo calificaron entre los mejores cinco que lograron descollar durante la etapa esplendorosa del movimiento nuevaolero nacional, misma que abarcó el segundo lustro de los ‘60. Sus “rivales artísticos” eran The Living Ends, The Challengers, Los Sonset y The Teen Sounds.
Los Thunders – cuyo vocalista era el también trompetista Héctor «Iko» Negrón Fernández –fue un quinteto surgido en Puerto Nuevo, Río Piedras, en 1965. Fue organizado por el organista y guitarrista Arturo Berríos y el baterista Gilberto Casillas. Lo completaronMiguel Ángel Portillo (ejecutante de la primera guitarra) y Jorge Santiago (bajista), quienes compartieron la dirección musical a partir de 1968. Realizaron sus primeras presentaciones en la Base Naval en Miramar. Poco después debutaron en la televisión participando en varias emisiones del entonces estelar programa Rambler Rendevous, que el productor cubano Tony Chiroldes mantenía en WAPA TV / Canal 4 y animaban su esposa Vilma Carbia y Carlos Rubén Ortiz.
En 1967, Luis Vigoreaux los reclutó para reemplazar a Los Tom Cats, que era el grupo de planta del espacio dominical Thom Corner. Allí acompañaban a Papo Román, Charlie Robles, Celinés y a los invitados de turno. Paralelamente, recorrían todo el país acompañando a Chucho Avellanet, Óscar Solo, Danny Rivera, Glorivee, etc. También actuaron como teloneros en conciertos de varios de los grupos más notables de su tiempo: The Monkees y The Young Rascals, entre ellos.
En 1970, Los Thunders mudaron su centro de operaciones a Rikavisión / Canal 7, donde fueron atracción permanente de El show de Lissette. Durante el período 1973-1974 agotaron una temporada en la discoteca Hunca Munca del Hotel San Juan. Después de una gira por Estados Unidos – Atlanta, Miami, Nueva Orleáns y Tennesee – permanecieron cinco años en el Hotel Conquistador, en Fajardo. No obstante, poco tiempo después de culminada aquella experiencia y, ya cercana la década de los ’80, Los Thunders se separaron.
Sin embargo, durante el verano de 1988, el baterista Gilberto Casillas reorganizó el quinteto con Rafael Ángel «Indio» Ojeda – antiguo integrante de Los Sonset – (cantante líder);Bernardo Vázquez (primera guitarra); Tony Sotomayor (guitarrista y segundo vocalista) yJorge Santiago (bajista). Esta segunda etapa resultó efímera.
