Maria Dolores Rivera, known to many as "Loly", passed away on May 14th at the age of 87 at Caton Park Nursing Home in Brooklyn, NY. She was born in Añasco, Puerto Rico, to Zoilo Carrero and Rosaura Gutierrez. She moved to New York as a bride at the age of 25, worked as a seamstress and was a proud member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. She was a fan of horror movies, loved music and dancing, enjoyed traveling and had a passion for playing bingo. She was known as a woman who spoke her mind, swore like a sailor and had an arsenal of dirty jokes. She lived on her own terms and never let age dictate her style as evidenced by the one and only tattoo which she got in her 70's and displayed as often as she could.
Maria is survived by her daughter Emily, former husband Cesar, granddaughter, grandson and great-grandson in addition to brothers Zoilo Jr, and Genaro, sister Margarita and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 9th, at Buxeda Cemetery in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. A memorial service will be announced.
Maria loved dogs and, towards the end, her favorite activity was pet therapy. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your local ASPCA to help shelter dogs find a forever home.
