STRAIN, John James. - Passed away at his home in Lake Tahoe on August 17, 2014 at age 74. Born in Philadelphia on December 23, 1939. Survived by his loving wife, Francine, his daughter, Erin Strain, his sons Michael (Anna) and John (Lisa), and his adoring grandchildren Sabrina, Ryan, Katrina, Maggie, and Stella. He also leaves behind his sisters, Margaret Bermingham (Patrick), Maureen Steinbruner, and Katie Weitz; brothers, George (Geraldine), Terry (Berta); cousin Mary Fergus (Patrick); and brother-in-law, Ed Masotti (Sandra). He was predeceased by his grand-daughter Annika Strain; his parents, George and Nellie Strain and Ed and Ellen Strain; his brother Ed Strain; his nephew Eddie Bermingham; and his brother-in-law, Al Weitz. He will also be missed by his large and loving family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins here and in Ireland.
John was proud to have been raised in Eureka Valley. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School and USF. At St. Ignatius, John was a member of the City championship football team in 1956 and went on to play at USF. A member of the United States Army, John served with distinction in Korea. He loved growing up in San Francisco and was a member of the Eureka Valley Gang, SIRs, Old Time Athletes Association, and a 50+-year member of the Olympic Club. John was also a founding member of the Marin Irish American Club. John enjoyed a successful career in real estate, where he logged 20+ years at Transamerica. He retired in 1996 and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at Lake Tahoe and the Russian River.
Friends are invited to attend the Rosary Service on Thursday, 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent’s Church at 1 St. Vincent’s Drive in San Rafael. The Funeral Mass will be on Friday at 10:30 a.m. also at St. Vincent’s Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Annika Kelly Strain (AKS) foundation or your favorite charity.
