August 1, 1928 – October 30, 2018
Mari McCrohan Mari A. McCrohan of Strawberry, a longtime former Tiburon resident, died October 30, 2018, after a period of declining health. She was 90. Mrs. McCrohan was born in Ireland. She lived in Dublin and London for eight years before moving to the United States to marry James F. McCrohan, also of Ireland. She and her husband were married in 1955 and raised their children in San Francisco's Forest Hill neighborhood before relocating to New York in 1967, where they lived on Long Island's North Shore. They returned to the Bay Area in 1974. They settled in Tiburon and their children attended local schools. Mrs. McCrohan started her real estate career in New York and continued it in Tiburon as an agent for broker Rupert Jernigan in downtown Tiburon. She became a broker and started her own business; at her death, she was still only semi-retired. A member of St. Hilary Parish, she volunteered at the Tiburon Thrift Store and was active in the St. Hilary outreach group for many years. For more than 40 years, she was an active volunteer with The Family Store of the Family Service Agency of Marin. She served on the agency board and, in the late 1980s, was named Volunteer of the Year. She was a longtime member and reservations chair of the Outdoor Art Club of Mill Valley and she drove for the American Cancer Society. Mrs. McCrohan loved reading American and European history and mystery novels; listening to classical music; visiting her family; and exploring the Bay Area by car, browsing antique stores as she went. She was outgoing and welcoming. Mrs. McCrohan had lived in Strawberry since 2013. Her husband, James F. McCrohan, died in 1979. She is survived by five children, Deirdre McCrohan, Patricia Gondolfo; Elizabeth McCrohan-Castro; Kevin McCrohan and Eileen McCrohan; two siblings, Kevin O'Reilly and Bernadette Cullen, both of Ireland; and five grand-children. Her son, James T. McCrohan, died in 2013. A brother, Brendan O'Reilly, and a sister, Josephine Berkery, also predeceased her. A wake will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m. November 9 at Keaton's Mortuary, 1022 E St., in San Rafael. Her funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. November 10 at St. Hilary Church, 761 Hilary Drive, Tiburon.

Twenty five years ago I came to California from Ireland and enjoyed the many visits with Mari and her daughter, Deirdre in Tiburon, where they always welcomed myself and my two daughters, Sarah and Emma. Among our favorite memories are the wonderful meals, her amazing collection of books, her contagious laugh when telling a funny story, and her pretty liberal perspective on life which was always so refreshing for those of us who had grown up in conservative Ireland! She loved volunteering at the thrift shop and I still chuckle at the few things I still have that she insisted I needed! What a unique lady- gracious and kind, intelligent and funny- our late Dad’s favorite cousin growing up in Kerry, Ireland..... they are together again- May she Rest In Peace- at dheis De go raibh a Anam...🙏 we will miss you, Mari.

When I first arrived in San Francisco 28 yrs ago, Mari & her daughter Deirdre were the first people I met. They immediately embraced me & made me feel at home. Mari was so charming & likable, the kind of person you wanted to be around. She welcomed me into her home & then helped me find a place to rent. I’d have been lost without her. Over the years when my parents ( my dad was her 1st cousin) visited from Ireland, they’d love to get together & reminisce about the old days growing up together in Kerry. Some great stories!
She was a dynamic lady & I’ll miss her a lot, Rest In Peace Mari...🙏
