Michael Cullen, a vibrant and deeply creative presence in the worlds of art, design, and education, passed away in 2025. He was 80. A longtime resident of Sausalito and San Francisco, California, Michael brought beauty, intelligence, and heart to every aspect of his life.
Born in 1944 to John and Rita Cullen, Michael was raised with a love of family, creativity, and connection. He is survived by his beloved sisters, Noreen and Deborah, and his life partner of 42 years, Roger M. Addison, with whom he shared a lifetime of joy, adventure, and unwavering love.
Michael earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to build a distinguished and multifaceted career as an artist, interior designer, and educator. His eye for design was impeccable, his creativity boundless, and his gift for inspiring others profound. Whether guiding students, curating spaces, or simply engaging in thoughtful conversation, Michael made a lasting impression.
He was an enthusiastic world traveler with a deep love for the ocean—particularly the beaches of Hawaii, where he found peace and inspiration. Michael also had a lifelong passion for theatre and opera, and treasured time spent in New York, London, and San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scenes. He was a discerning collector of art, an avid reader, and someone who delighted in discovering beauty in all forms—often with a favorite shopping bag in hand and a warm story to share.
Michael’s beautiful smile, engaging spirit, and deep kindness touched the lives of countless friends, colleagues, and loved ones. His legacy lives on in the many people he inspired, the art he created, and the joy he brought to the world.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
