Anita Louise Bangs

January 16, 1943July 23, 2021

Anita Louise Bangs passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 23. She was married to Philip H. Bangs for 57 years.  A lifelong resident of Sandwich, she was born in January of 1943, to Edgar and Anna Caron.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Anita especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, traveling with her husband across the United States, and enjoying the wonders of nature. She was an avid birdwatcher, and an expert seamstress and handcrafter who created beautiful gifts for family and friends. A Physical Education teacher in the Sandwich School System for 20 years, Anita brought her athletic talents and caring nature to generations of elementary and junior high school students. She was a faithful parishioner at Corpus Christi Parish, where she loved to sing in the choir. She also sang in the Cape Cod Chorale.

All through her life, Anita was a great supporter of Sandwich community activities. Named Miss Sandwich in 1962, she participated in the town’s 325th anniversary celebration that year. She also chaired the parade committee for the town’s 350th anniversary. For many years, Anita participated and performed in the Lions Club minstrel shows and most recently, she shared her memories of Sandwich in a video interview for the Sandwich town archives “Tell me a story” oral history project.

Anita is survived by her husband, their two sons and their wives, Robert and Joanne, Daniel and Jennifer, and six grandchildren, Benjamin, William, Bryan, Aaron, Edgar and Anna, and by her brother Gerald Caron and her sisters Janice Caron and Valerie Caron. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Carol Caron, and brother Roger Caron.

Calling hours will be Thursday, July 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, Sandwich, MA. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 30, 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Parish, East Sandwich followed by a private burial.

What can I say? You will be missed. While it’s been decades since I heard your laugh in the kitchen at the Pleasant Street Place or watched you and Mom make all those pine cone wreaths or Bobby and I (and Danny too) helped you in with the groceries after a trip to the base PX , I still remember it like it was yesterday. You made my childhood brighter and better.

With undying love . . .

In our childhood years, the Caron/Thomas/Morrow families shared many happy gatherings; Anita and I were just a couple of the kids in the clan. As happens, the various family members went their own ways as the years passed. Happily, Anita and Phil and Lou and I caught up with each other in 2010 and became close buddies, especially during our "snowbird" days in Florida. I will always remember the good times with my "sister/cousin" and will miss her greatly. Lou and I send our love and prayers to the family.
