Sagamore Beach - The world lost a beloved mother and grandmother when Arleen M Chapin (Haran) passed away on May 28, 2021. She left this world, surrounded by love, at her home overlooking the Cape Cod Canal. The same home where she shared many happy summer days as a child with her parents and grandparents.
Arleen was born on April 15, 1938 in Boston and raised in Saint Mark’s parish in Dorchester. She and Hovey Chapin were married in 1958 and moved to Sagamore Beach in 1964 to raise their family.
After raising her sons she completed a 20 year career as a court reporter for the district attorney’s office in Plymouth County.
A devoted mother, Arleen taught her children that both education and a strong work ethic were essential factors for achieving success. She studied at UMass Boston and Trinity College (Dublin), receiving her bachelor’s degree in Irish history at age 68.
She spent countless hours attending her children and grandchildren’s games and activities. She always encouraged them and cheered them on. Spending time with her children and grandchildren was most important to her. Some highlights included a 1973 summer camping trip to Seattle with her sons and husband, trips to the family camp in Maine and sleepovers with the grandkids.
She relied on a strong faith in God and the power of prayer to guide her through the challenges of life.
Her daily text messages to the family always ended with the same phrase she learned from her Irish grandmother,
“May God bless you and keep you and bring you safe home”
“We love you Grammy!”
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Willis Hovey Chapin and her parents, John & Mary (Daly) Haran. She is survived by two sons, Tim (Melinda) Chapin of East Falmouth, Dan Chapin of Bourne and three cherished grandchildren, Madeline Chapin Amberg, Christopher Chapin and Matthew Chapin. Arleen also leaves behind her loving siblings Barbara Dinn, Kevin Haran, Jack Haran, sister in-law Barbara Chamberlain and 5 beloved nieces and nephews. She also shared a special bond with Cheryl & Mark McNally.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Privatus Care Solutions for their professional care and support.
Joint services are planned for Hovey and Arleen Chapin for 10 am on June 19 at Saint Margaret’s Church, 141 Main Street, Buzzards Bay, MA.
