Barbara Ann (Marr) DeAnzeris, 74, of Brookfield, Conn., passed away at her Cape Cod home in Sandwich, MA on Sept. 13 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Barb was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and friend.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Michael DeAnzeris, Jr., and their two sons, Michael III of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and his wife, Jill; and Christopher of Needham, Mass., and his wife, Katie. Barbara was the devoted grandmother of Sophia and Michael DeAnzeris IV of Saratoga Springs, and Matthew and Abby DeAnzeris of Needham. She also leaves her two dear brothers, William A. Marr of Charlottesville, VA., and Thomas J. Marr of Brookfield, CT. She was also the caring sister-in-law of Anthony DeAnzeris of Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Barbara was born in New York, the daughter of the late William A. Marr and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Marr. She spent several years with her beloved aunt and uncle, Marcelle and Walter Johnson. Barbara attended Florida State University and was a graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY.
Barb was a warm and supportive mother who spent countless hours at her sons’ hockey and baseball games. She was their biggest fan and cheerleader, from youth hockey and Little League through high school and college. Barb was always giving of her time, she was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she organized many events to help people in the community. She also volunteered her time at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen for more than 25 years.
In their later years, Barb and Mike spent happy times in the Florida Keys on the island of Marathon. But Barb's most treasured time was spent with her children and grandchildren on Cape Cod. “Grammy” loved and adored her four grandchildren. She stood in chilly hockey rinks, on the soccer sidelines, and enjoyed many sunny days at the Sandwich beach and creek. She was a warm and welcoming hostess, opening her home to share wonderful meals and conversation. She loved hosting family dinners, all things golden retriever, watching sunsets on their fishing boat, and regularly telling her grandchildren that she “loved them to the moon.”
Barbara fought through the challenges of her illness to share memorable moments with her family and to witness important milestones, thanks to the loving care of her husband. She watched with tremendous pride this year as her oldest grandchild, Matthew, graduated from high school in June. The summer of 2023 was spent in joyful communion with her husband, children, and grandchildren on the Cape.
The DeAnzeris family is grateful to Barbara’s care team at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Hospice of Cape Cod.
There will be a celebration of her life on Monday, October 16, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brookfield, CT. Donations can be made to St. Paul’s Memorial Garden in her name or Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
