

SANDWICH - Barbara Anne Gates (Morrow), 91, passed away on July 14, 2025 at home with her loved one’s present. She was born in Sandwich, Massachusetts (a true native) on August 28, 1933 to Mary Francis Haines and Wallace Seymour Morrow Jr. She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years Perley Walter Gates, her brothers Wallace and Eugene, and her sisters Charlotte and Virginia. Perley and Barbara were married at the Federated Church on Main street in Sandwich on July 4, 1954. She is survived by her four children, Pamela of Mashpee, Leslie, Lori, and son-in-law Bob of Sandwich, Douglas of Mesa, Arizona, her granddaughter Melissa and partner Dave of Schenectady, New York, and several nieces, nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Barbara graduated from the Henry T. Wing School in Sandwich in 1951. She attended Curry Collage for 2 years where she met Perley and left collage to get married. Perley joined the Air Force and they and their four kids traveled the world (Okinawa, Germany (Barbara's favorite), and various states). Perley retired and they lived in Middleboro until they moved to Tampa, Florida for many years before they finally settled back home in Sandwich.
Barbara was gifted in music and theatre. She played piano and acted in numerous Sandwich Town plays throughout the years. Barbara had a beautiful soprano voice. She loved singing in her church choir. She also loved swimming in her beloved Sandwich Boardwalk "crick" with her fellow Sandwich floaters. Barbara was a tour guide at the Hoxie House for years. One of her favorite times was taking her granddaughter to the Dunbar House for tea and sandwiches after church. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and she adored dressing up in purple clothing and red hats! Barbara also loved her sparkly baseball caps and received many compliments every time she wore them.
A memorial service will be held at First Church, Sandwich, MA on Friday, October 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Donations can be made in Barbara's name to First Church, Sandwich, MA. The burial will be private.
