David was born on November 22, 1934, in West Roxbury. He enlisted in the Navy at 17 and experienced the life of a seaman on the USS Midway, where he served his country while traveling the world. He graduated from Boston University as an English Major and later received an MSW from the University of Ottawa. After school David met and married Judith and they eventually settled on Cape Cod in Monument Beach to raise their children. His career was centered on service, working for non-profit organizations Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society. David later started a private practice as a psychotherapist; he also facilitated a Men’s Group for over 20 years which still exists today. His guidance and wisdom made a strong and lasting impact on all who had the honor of knowing him.
David is survived by his loving wife Paula (Weber) Long, daughter Christina Long Mager and husband Andrew of Essex, Vermont, son David and wife Ellen of North Easton, MA, grandchildren Jack, Allison, Isabel and AJ, his former wife Judith Long of Bourne, stepchildren Jeff Weber and Ann-Marie of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, Tim Weber of Sedona, AZ, Elise Weber Princi and Patrick Princi, of West Barnstable, MA, and step grandchildren Madeline, Max, Kate, Tully and Sean. He is predeceased by his parents Edwin and Jacqueline (Corbett) Long, brother Edwin Long and sister Jean Shields.
David was an ardent biker and runner who was often seen on the trails of his beloved Cape Cod Canal. He was a voracious reader and writer, and he wrote a book and many articles pertaining to his field of expertise. He and Paula spent many years creating and growing their beautiful gardens. His children and grandchildren adored him for his practical jokes, funny stories, and genuine interest in all of their lives.
David lived according to one of the basic teachings of the Unity Church, which is that we are all conscious creators of our lives and each person is worthy of kindness and compassion. Instead of seeking individuality, he sought to understand our connectedness. Instead of judging our life choices, he listened and validated us for being true to ourselves and following our own path to fulfillment. He will be deeply missed but his legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
David’s family would like to thank all of the nurses and aides, including his devoted Hospice care givers, at the Cape Heritage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Sandwich for their tender care throughout his stay. They made our journey as easy as it could possibly have been, and we will never forget the professionalism and loving attention given to him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich. A reception will follow at the Pilot House on the Cape Cod Canal.
