Irene entered this world on Friday the 13th of December, 1940, the fifth of 8 children born to Myrtle (Gilbert) Yoho and Edward (Fred) Yoho. She grew up in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania and was graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958.
In 1960, she embarked on 20 years of service as a military wife, travelling throughout the U.S. and also to Germany and the Philippines. Despite the challenges of constant moves, she created a warm and secure home for her children. She and her family settled on Cape Cod in 1974.
Irene was a dedicated stay-at-home mom, but as her children grew older, she became a certified nurses’ aide, first in Sandwich and later in Port Charlotte, Florida, where she lived for several years. She loved her work and won awards for exemplary performance. Many of her patients and their families kept in touch with her for years because they were so grateful for her loving care.
Upon her retirement, Irene returned to the Cape to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was an accomplished cook, volunteering for Days of Hospitality at St. Mary’s Church and preparing meals for Bingo nights at the American Legion in Sandwich. She was particularly known for her baking and contributed countless pies for Legion fundraisers. She also kept her grandchildren supplied with their favorite pumpkin bread.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, by siblings Margaret, Glenn, Robert, Shirley, Virginia and Barbara, and by her grandson David. She is survived by daughters Lisa Barr (spouse Matthew Palmer) and Stacey Moran (spouse Mark Moran) and by her son Robert Scott Barr (spouse Meghan Barr). She is also survived by grandchildren Jonathan and Meghan Moran, Michael-Giuliana Palmer, and Ethan, Jared and Nolan Barr, and by her sister, Helen Nadeau. Additional survivors include many nieces and nephews, and her dear friend, Judy Gilfoy, whom she loved like a sister and who helped in so many ways during her illness.
At Irene’s request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the American Kidney Fund (kidneyfund.org) in honor of her grandson Jonathan, or to NAMI (www.nami.org) in memory of her grandson David.
What would make her most happy, though, is to bake a pie for a loved one, in her honor.
