OBITUARY

James Clayton Burke

February 8, 1934April 25, 2021

FORESTDALE: James C. Burke, 87, passed away on Sunday, April 25th, 2021 with family by his side, while being lovingly cared for at the Decatur House in Sandwich, MA. He is now at home with our Lord after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Sandwich who was happily married to Jean Burke, also of Sandwich, until her passing in 2007. Jim is survived by his first wife, Thelma Burke, and their three sons, Wayne Burke, Glenn (Karen) Burke, and Timothy (Christine) Burke. Jim was a loving stepfather to Steven (Judy) Lothrop, Donna (Ed) Matthews, and Karen (Brendan) Walsh. He was a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren and four great grand-children. Jim was a loving uncle to a niece and many nephews in the Sandwich area.

Jim proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Armed Forces during the Korean War. He was a member of the Forestdale Baptist Church, and retired from the South Shore YMCA Camps in Sandwich, MA as the Maintenance Director for over 30 years. During his retirement Jim found joy in spending time with his family, walking the canal, having coffee with friends, and tending to his yard and birds. He was an ardent fan of model trains and browsing the local antique shops. Jim loved the Cape and often said everything he needed was right here in town, he had no need to go over that bridge. He will be dearly missed by everyone in his life.

Interment will be private.

In memory of Jim, contributions may be made to the Forestdale Church or the South Shore YMCA Camps in Sandwich, MA.

It was very sad news to hear of Jimmy's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years at the South Shore Y Camps. I considered him a trusted colleague and a friend. He loved the campers and staff at Burgess and Hayward. His commitment to camp will never be forgotten. Jimmy was as kind of person as I have ever met. I'm sure he never had an enemy. My deepest sympathy to all his family on your loss of such a wonderful man.

Dear family,

For the last 30 years we have enjoyed Jim’s laughter and stories,
as we travelled to the Cape for summers and holidays! He brought the pie and we ate it while doing all those puzzles and singing Christmas songs. What loving and precious memories we carry. With all our hearts,
Kim, Jason, Cassandra and Siobhan❤️
