

James, known as Jim, was born to Thomas and Adelaide Corbett on February 21, 1939 in Boston, MA. Educated in the Parochial schools in Boston and graduated from Cathedral High School. He spent three years at Our Lady of Hope Oblate Seminary in Newburgh, NY before leaving and deciding to served his country in the US Navy from 1960 – 1964. While serving in the navy he returned home to marry his wife Rita (O’Donnell) of 61 years. They proceeded to live in Virginia Beach, VA while serving in the Navy. After discharge they moved to West Roxbury MA where they lived for 30 years until settled on Cape Cod.
Jim is survived by his wife Rita (O’Donnel) and his six children. Thomas Corbett and wife Lisa of Mansfield, James Corbett Jr. of Wareham, Lisa Fernandes and her husband Kevin of Mashpee, Laura Gerrity Cratty and her husband Paul of Sandwich, Linda Curtin and her husband Michael of Sandwich and Lesley Short and her husband Gregory of Marshfield. Jim is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Charles Corbett, Michael Corbett and Joseph Corbett and his sisters Patricia Hastry, Theresa Hennessey, Ann Murphy, and Kathleen Bloomfield and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother John Corbett, sisters Joan Calabro, Mary Wilson, and Ellen Gibbons.
Jim earned a Bachelors Degree from Northeastern University and a Masters Degree from Boston University. He served on the Boston Police Department as a Patrolman and later as a Detective on the Arson Squad. He was very proud of his service to the Navy and to the Police Department, and was honored to have his son Thomas and daughter Lesley follow his footsteps as Boston Police Officers. After retiring from the Police Department, James worked for The Commonwealth of MA (SORB) where he worked until the day he went into hospice care. He had many different jobs throughout his life and it was joked that he worked to socialize. He was a friend to everyone and rarely entered a room without talking to everyone in it, whether he knew you or not.
Jim loved to travel with his family to countless destinations. He was a very religious man and attended mass weekly.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday September 15, 2023 at 11am, Corpus Christi Parish, 324 Quaker Meeting House Rd. East Sandwich, MA, burial will follow at Sandwich Town Cemetery, Rt. 130 in Sandwich. Visitation will be held Thursday 14th from 4-8pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Rt. 6A Sandwich, MA.
