Jeanette A. Jones, 86, of Forestdale, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. She was born on August 18, 1938, in Foxboro, MA, to the late George and Priscilla Jones and was the beloved sister of the late Elizabeth Small.
Jeanette graduated from Foxboro High School in 1956 and earned her Associate’s Degree in Medical Secretarial Studies from Becker Junior College in 1958. Her adventurous spirit led her to join American Airlines in 1959, where she attended Stewardess Training in Dallas, Texas, and spent three years soaring the skies. It was during this time that her passion for travel took flight.
In 1968, Jeanette moved to Cape Cod, ultimately settling in Sandwich in 1969. She began a long and fulfilling career in bookkeeping in the early 1970s, working for Joe Beckoff at Atlantic Coast Fillet, a fish processing company at the Sandwich Marina. Later, she started her own successful bookkeeping business and served as the elected Treasurer of the Barnstable Fire and Water District—a role she cherished.
Jeanette’s career evolved further when she became a Justice of the Peace, officiating over 200 weddings and funerals across Cape Cod and Massachusetts. Her dedication to community and women’s empowerment was evident through her involvement with the Business and Professional Women (B.P.W.) organization, where she mentored women, including those in prison, teaching them essential life skills such as managing finances and building savings.
Her love of travel took her to Italy, China, Iceland, and Russia, among other destinations, creating memories that she cherished deeply. She was also an avid Mahjongg player and founder of the Mahjongg club at the Sandwich Senior Center, where she enthusiastically taught anyone willing to learn.
Above all, Jeanette was most proud of her family. She is survived by her three daughters: Julie Long and her husband Jonathan of Sandwich, MA; Susan Sullivan and her husband Jim of Tampa, FL; and Ellen Dodge Urquhart and her husband Jeff of Forestdale, MA. Jeanette was a devoted grandmother to Hannah Sullivan, Madeline Ayala, Jacob Sullivan, Danielle Long, and Donald Long, and was excitedly anticipating the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Molly Ayala, of Tampa, FL.
Jeanette will be remembered for her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to her family and her Cape Cod community. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the memories she created. Jeanette’s vibrant spirit and love of life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA, on February 8th from 3:00pm-7:00pm.
