Joseph Patrick Carlson, 81, of Sandwich, MA, passed away on May 10, 2026. He was born on June 30, 1944, in Harrisburg, PA, to his parents, E. Francis Carlson and Catherine Marie (McCormick) Carlson. Joseph “Tato Joe” Carlson was the kind of man whose presence alone brought peace. To know him was to know comfort, laughter, adventure, and unconditional love. His love for his family was endless, and his spirit will continue to guide and surround them every day.
Joseph served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of life that reflected a steady sense of duty and a willingness to work in service to something larger than himself. He graduated from Cape Cod Community College and Suffolk University. That same dedication carried into his professional life as a tax accountant, where he was known for his care, integrity, and straightforward honesty.
Joe’s life was defined by an extraordinary commitment to athletics, community, and service across Cape Cod and throughout New England. From 1993 through 2017, he played an integral role in numerous Time Out Productions events, including the New England Triathlon Tour and the Sandwich “We Gather Together” Thanksgiving 5K, a beloved community tradition that benefited local food pantries for many years.
A dedicated endurance athlete, Joe competed in both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon. He was an active member of the Sandwich Running Club, proudly participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge, and loved the game of golf. Through his determination, sportsmanship, and unwavering encouragement of fellow athletes, he inspired countless people both on and off the course. Joe’s passion for fitness, community, charitable causes, and the friendships built through sports left a lasting impact on Cape Cod and on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joe proudly served as Treasurer of Scouting America’s Cape Cod & Islands Council #224 for nearly a decade, highlighting his commitment to leadership and service. He was greatly involved in the Sandwich community, serving as a registrar in the Town of Sandwich, a founding member of the Sandwich Boardwalk, and Treasurer of the Sandwich Town Hall Preservation Trust Board. He was also a proud member of the Sandwich-Bourne Lions Club, supporting local charitable initiatives, demonstrating his lifelong dedication to contributions.
Joe was far more than a financial advisor or tax preparer to more than 1,000 clients; he was a trusted friend and a cherished member of their extended family. Appointments often began with taxes, but soon gave way to conversations about life, family, and sports, reflecting the genuine care and meaningful connections he built with everyone he met.
Since the day we met Tato, he has become an anchor within the Carlson-Munoz family, a steady and calming presence whose wisdom, warmth, and wit have shaped many of our most meaningful moments. He had a way of making ordinary days feel meaningful simply by being there. His beautiful smile and gentle eyes carried a quiet reassurance that no storm could truly overcome us.
Tato was funny in the most effortless way. When he told a joke, he would wear a small smirk, already amused before anyone else had the chance to laugh. He never shied away from humor, and somehow that only made him more lovable. No matter what we were talking about, he always had a story to share, whether it was about his travels, someone he knew in town, or something about the town of Sandwich.
One of the most unforgettable things about Tato was his love for animals. He adored Irish Setters and Golden Retrievers, which reflected the kind of person he was: intelligent, playful, athletic, independent, and fiercely loyal. Even though we didn’t have the chance to grow up with him, we still inherited his love of animals.
Tato carried an energetic spirit throughout his life. He approached each day with curiosity and excitement, inspiring everyone around him to live more fully. Some of our greatest memories are the adventures he created for us, filled with laughter, spontaneity, wonder, and love. He taught us that life was meant to be explored and embraced.
Tato Joe will forever live on in the sound of waves at the Cape Cod Canal, the quiet chirping of birds on a sunny day, laughter after a perfectly timed joke, and the determination to keep moving forward. More than memories, he leaves behind a feeling that will stay with us always, the feeling of being deeply loved, deeply seen, and never alone.
We love you forever and ever, every single day, Tato Joe.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, E. Francis Carlson and Catherine Marie, his late brothers Franny Carlson of Florida and Ronny Carlson (Sherri) of Philadelphia, his second cousin Liz, and his beloved wife, Lucy Carlson (Mocio), whose love and companionship were a guiding light throughout his life. He is survived by his daughter, Kennedy (Tami) Carlson, who brought him great pride and was a steady, meaningful presence in his life, and was a caring grandfather to his granddaughters, Destiny Munoz, Chloe Munoz, and Giselle Munoz, who brought him immense joy. He was wholeheartedly dedicated to each of them.
He was a loving uncle to Katie Carlson, Cara Carlson (Ty), and his special nieces Ashleigh Baisch, Alyssa Baisch, Savannah Flemmings, and Charlee Flemmings. His cousins are Bill, Kathy (Dave), Jeneen, the late Kevin, Valerie (Pete), Nicole (Phil), and Joe Bashwinger. He had many extended first and second cousins and their children, who loved him dearly.
