Julia Hendy

February 2, 1933May 6, 2021

HENDY, Julia Claire “Judy” (Casperson), 88, of Sandwich, MA passed away peacefully at home on May 6, 2021. She was born to the late William T. and Ethel S. (Ford) Casperson on February 2, 1933. Judy was a lifelong resident of Sandwich.

She graduated from Sandwich High School in 1950. She played on the first of many championship basketball teams coached by Ed Zion. She went on to graduate from Katherine Gibbs School in 1952. She worked for 3 years as Executive Secretary to James F. Peebles, Superintendent of Schools for Bourne, Sandwich, and Mashpee. She worked as a reporter for the Standard Times (n/k/a Cape Cod Times) for 10 years, covering all news in Sandwich. She later worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for 25 years as a Supervisory Field Representative, working throughout New England and upstate New York. She supervised the Town of Sandwich annual census for over 30 years and worked in the Sandwich Town Clerk’s office for 14 years.

Judy met the love of her life, William R. Hendy, Jr., on the Casino baseball field in 1946 and they later married in Sandwich on April 11, 1953. They raised four children together and were happily married 39 years until his passing on April 2, 1991.

Judy was very involved in Sandwich activities, especially those involving her children and later her grandchildren. She was always in the audience or on the sidelines showing her support. In her early adult years, she played weekly in the women’s bowling league, was involved with the Grange and Rainbow Girls. She helped organize and was involved for many years in youth baseball programs and Campfire Girls. She was a member of First Church Sandwich for over 60 years and served in various positions over the years. She also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. She volunteered for and served on the Boards of many committees that benefited the youth and senior residents in town, including Sandwich High School Alumni Association, Council on Aging, Friends of Sandwich Archives, Town Charter Committee, DeConto Sports Complex Committee, High School Accreditation Committee, and the Advisory Board of the Sandwich Community School. She was also an alumna of the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy and Citizens Fire Academy. Her love of genealogy got her involved with the Nye Family of America and the Willard Family of America. She loved to help people “find their roots”. Judy is survived by her daughter Judy K. Hendy and sons William R. Hendy III (Terri), John J. Hendy Sr. (Susan), and Thomas L. Hendy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Heather (Hendrik), Samantha, John Jr., Sarah, and Jason.

I am sending my deepest condolences to all the Hendy family. All my life, Aunt Judy has been a very special person and always provided a direct connection to Sandwich and my Dad's birthplace. My many memories stretch back to her wedding, visiting the old house by the main road in Sandwich, and lobster boils at the cottage on Spectacle Pond when my four half-cousins were young. She continued to provide a strong family connection with regular correspondence through the years. We enjoyed sharing our genealogy information and particularly her research of our common Ford line going back to Martha Edmondson. This is sad news indeed and we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately, we probably will not be able to cross the border to attend the service. Photo taken 2013 in Sharon.

To the family of Judy Hendy,
My husband and I have been walking along the canal road for many years and met and befriended the sweet little redhead lady, Judy.
She was always pleasant. She wore “shorts” in the warmer months but I always wore regular length jeans. She would ask why I wasn’t wearing shorts so whenever I would see her at a distance I would roll up my pant legs so that she might think that I was wearing shorts. It became a little joke between us. We, and everyone that knew her at the canal miss her friendly smile and talk.

Judy was an extraordinary woman, whose contributions to the Town of Sandwich will be forever remembered. She was instrumental in helping me with Kindergarten population projections throughout my years at the Oak Ridge School. Many times I saw her working the Election Polls. I also knew her as the proud grandmother of the Hendy children who were educated at Oak Ridge. During the last year of the H.T. Wing’s existence as a school, we invited Judy to come and share stories with the students about her time there as a student and athlete. I most enjoyed listening to her speak about her memories of playing basketball on championship teams in Sandwich. She was a pioneer in women’s sports! I am so glad I can say I knew her. To Judy’s family, I wish you peace and comfort, as you remember your matriarch, a remarkable woman!

Mrs. Hendy was so helpful to us in reference to the family SHSA scholarship we set up in memory of our parents, Carlo and Peggy Pola. I enjoyed communicating with her via email and Facebook. She was another Sandwich icon now in Heaven with so many others from our childhood years. She’ll be greatly missed by her family and by many “Townies” - RIP

I will miss my phone calls to Mrs. Hendy regarding the class of '75 updates and alumni dinner plans....I can't imagine anyone putting in the time and effort that she did to keep everything in order. I know we will certainly try to keep things going for the Sandwich Alumni scholarship program...but no one can fill her shoes...she was so happy to read the roll call every year...thank you Mrs. Hendy!!! XOXO

Judy's knowledge of Sandwich history and her knowledge of the proper way to run a public meeting have been invaluable to the Friends of the Sandwich Town Archives for all the years that Judy has served with us. I am still in shock that she has passed, she had such a busy vital life even tho she was now 88 years old! What an example to us all.
I just made her favorite cookies, using butterscotch drops instead of chocolate chips for our next FOSTA meeting in her honor. I certainly wish she was with us to share. Kaethe Maguire-president of FOSTA.
