Judy was a lifelong resident of Sandwich.
She graduated from Sandwich High School in 1950. She played on the first of many championship basketball teams coached by Ed Zion. She went on to graduate from Katherine Gibbs School in 1952. She worked for 3 years as Executive Secretary to James F. Peebles, Superintendent of Schools for Bourne, Sandwich, and Mashpee. She worked as a reporter for the Standard Times (n/k/a Cape Cod Times) for 10 years, covering all news in Sandwich. She later worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for 25 years as a Supervisory Field Representative, working throughout New England and upstate New York. She supervised the Town of Sandwich annual census for over 30 years and worked in the Sandwich Town Clerk’s office for 14 years.
Judy met the love of her life, William R. Hendy, Jr., on the Casino baseball field in 1946 and they later married in Sandwich on April 11, 1953. They raised four children together and were happily married 39 years until his passing on April 2, 1991.
Judy was very involved in Sandwich activities, especially those involving her children and later her grandchildren. She was always in the audience or on the sidelines showing her support. In her early adult years, she played weekly in the women’s bowling league, was involved with the Grange and Rainbow Girls. She helped organize and was involved for many years in youth baseball programs and Campfire Girls. She was a member of First Church Sandwich for over 60 years and served in various positions over the years. She also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. She volunteered for and served on the Boards of many committees that benefited the youth and senior residents in town, including Sandwich High School Alumni Association, Council on Aging, Friends of Sandwich Archives, Town Charter Committee, DeConto Sports Complex Committee, High School Accreditation Committee, and the Advisory Board of the Sandwich Community School. She was also an alumna of the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy and Citizens Fire Academy. Her love of genealogy got her involved with the Nye Family of America and the Willard Family of America. She loved to help people “find their roots”.
Judy is survived by her daughter Judy K. Hendy and sons William R. Hendy III (Terri), John J. Hendy Sr. (Susan), and Thomas L. Hendy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Heather (Hendrik), Samantha, John Jr., Sarah, and Jason.
