Lorraine Anne Lupone

August 10, 1939July 2, 2013

Lorraine Anne (Rosenberger) Lupone, 73, of Sandwich died peacefully at her home on July 1 in the loving arms of her family. Lorraine was born in Syracuse, New York where she graduated from Nottingham High School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with honors from LeMoyne College in Syracuse. She married in 1962 and raised four children, residing first in New Hartford, New York, followed by San Jose, California, Wyckoff, New Jersey and finally settling in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Mrs. Lupone taught Math at both Sandwich High School and the Forestdale School, taking a sabbatical in 1988 to pursue a Master of Education degree from Harvard University, and retired in 1992 after 17 years of teaching. Subsequently, she was hired by Houghton Mifflin publishing in Boston as an editor, leaving this position in 2002 to freelance. Lorraine had many talents and hobbies, including gardening, reading, quilting, painting, and the New York Times crossword puzzle. She also found the time to become an accomplished pianist often entertaining her family. She loved to travel especially to Barcelona, Spain where one of her daughters resides. Lorraine was a lifetime volunteer in a variety of capacities, including the Junior Women’s Club, PTA, and Friends of the Sandwich Public Library. As the original “Picture Lady”, Lorraine shared her joy of art with countless Sandwich elementary students by bringing famous works of art into the classroom. Students still enjoy this art history program today. She is survived by her husband Frederick E. Lupone, daughters Susan E. Lupone Stonis of Scituate, MA and Rebecca A. Lupone of Barcelona, Spain and sons Frederick T. Lupone of Fernandina Beach, FL and Thomas P. Lupone of Lexington, MA, sister Janice Lundy of Liverpool, NY, brothers Raymond Rosenberger of Jamesville, NY and Robert Rosenberger of Spring Hill, FL, ten grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and countless loving friends. When asked which of her accomplishments she was most proud of, she would not hesitate to say it was her children and grandchildren and the kind of people that they had become. A funeral Mass will be held at Corpus Christi parish on Quaker Meeting House Road in Sandwich at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday July 10. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lorraine’s name to the ALS Association ( and Friends of the Sandwich Public Library (

I just recently learned of Lorraine's passing and wanted to share a favorite picture from the summer of 2009 when we met on the beach at Maushop. Fred, you and Lorraine came and had a drink with my husband and me on "our porch" (at least for that week) at the top of the beach steps.

I knew Lorraine from Houghton Mifflin as well as her freelance work and we bonded instantly. She radiated warmth and kindness, was so intelligent, and brightened everyone's day. I have thought of her often, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you know so many of her colleagues from Houghton Mifflin are still mourning her loss, too.

To the Lupone Family, My sincere condolences to you all. Lorraine was such a special woman. One of my fondest HS memories includes Lorraine who always knew the right thing to say. She was a devoted teacher who loved her students and always wanted the best for them. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Psalm 126:5 "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy."

Thank you to all who have expressed their feelings about Lorraine here and in visits, food, cards and kind words of support. It is difficult to sum up a life as full as Lorraine's but just let me say that she was exactly what she appeared to be. A wonderful lady in every respect. To the very end she was accepting, brave and dignified just as she was in life. We miss her so much already but as her smile tells
us she wanted us to celebrate her life not mourn for her.

Go in peace Lorraine. Save us a place.

So sorry to hear of the passing of your mom Sue and Fritz. She was a great mom and quite an accomplished woman. Funny how as a kid I only saw her as a mom and did not really get to know the whole person. I wish I could have known your mom when I was an adult. Love and sincere sympathies.
