Louis "Lou" Augustine Costello, 89, of East Sandwich, MA, took his final bow on March 8, 2025, at home, with his devoted wife, Joan, by his side. Theirs was a love story that spanned more than 60 years—one of unwavering devotion, deep companionship, and a bond that remained unbreakable to his last breath.
Born on July 15, 1935, in Newton, MA, to the late Yvonne Marie Costello (Bouchard) and Louis Augustus Costello, Lou was raised in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School. At 19, he answered the call to serve, becoming a U.S. Marine—an identity he carried with him for life. His discipline, grit, and resilience shaped not only his own path but also the values he instilled in his children: integrity, perseverance, and a relentless work ethic. Lou embodied the definition of toughness—meeting life’s challenges head-on, never backing down, and always leading by example.
His sharp and inquisitive mind led him to Suffolk University, where he earned a degree in Chemistry. He spent countless hours in the lab, drawn to the precision and complexity of science. He began his career at Brandeis University in their chemistry lab before joining the Department of Fish and Game, where he contributed to the conservation of marine and freshwater fisheries. Later, he transitioned into corporate sales, forging a long and successful career built on his ability to connect with people, solve problems, and always provide for his family. Through every chapter of his life, Lou overcame obstacles with a quiet resilience that became the cornerstone of his family’s foundation.
Lou was a man of deep faith and an open spiritual heart, embracing his path with acceptance and grace—a lesson for the ages. His wisdom, humor, and unwavering spirit made him a source of strength for so many. Known affectionately as The Mayor in his Pedaling for Parkinson’s community, he was the go-to for advice and encouragement, forever chasing RPMs and inspiring others on their journey. Music was woven into his soul; a self-taught musician, he could often be found at his baby grand, filling the house with melodies that will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him. Lou had a deep appreciation for a good party, a sharp wit that kept everyone on their toes, and a knack for making people feel at home in his presence.
He is survived by his wife, Joan (Howard) Costello of East Sandwich; his children, Susanne Goldstein and her husband, Stefan, of Denver, Colorado; Matthew Costello of Bourne, Massachusetts; and Jessica Gumkowski and her husband, Brian, of Carlsbad, California. He also leaves behind his grandson, Vincent Louis Costello, who carries his name and spirit forward, and his faithful golden lab, Evie. He is reunited in spirit with his father, Louis, his mother, Yvonne, and his sister, Elaine, no doubt sharing stories and laughter once again.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 14th at 11:30 AM at Corpus Christi Parish, 324 Quaker Meeting House Rd., East Sandwich, MA. Burial with military honors will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
