Lucille Genevieve Murphy, née Ares, left us on Thursday evening, January 16th. She was born September 7, 1938, the youngest child of Adrienne Gobeil and Rosaire Ares, who immigrated to the U.S. from Trois Rivières, Quebec. Growing up in Stoughton and Sharon, Lucille and her brothers, Paul, John, and Roland, and sister Bernadette (m. Hixson), all spoke French before learning English. Lucille was raised in the Catholic faith. She graduated from Archbishop Williams High School in 1957, and two years later, completed nursing school at Catherine Labouré School of Nursing, now Labouré College of Healthcare. Fun-loving and with a ready smile, Lucille and her classmates found some freedom, even under the watchful eyes of the sisters, to have fun out on the town and especially during training in Baltimore one hot summer.
Her first of a lifetime of nursing jobs was at the VA Hospital in Brockton, where she met her match, Thomas William Murphy. They married in 1960 and raised their four daughters in Brockton. A son, Thomas, died shortly after birth. Lucille grieved this loss sorely her whole life and looked forward to being reunited with him in heaven. In the meantime, she was a joyful and loving mother to her daughters. Having grown up in the shadow of the Great Depression and in an immigrant family, she was used to thriftiness and could sew herself up a simple dress in a few hours. She made dresses for her daughters in the same style but different fabrics, and knitted sweaters for back to school.
When her kids were grown, Lucille and Tom moved to Cape Cod where they lived for 30 years, first in South Yarmouth and then in Sandwich. She appreciated beautiful paintings, and took painting classes, often referring to herself as a frustrated artist, and she enjoyed painting the serene landscapes of the Cape. She had a long nursing career; her last two jobs were at Quincy City Hospital and the VNA of Cape Cod. She volunteered with the Sandwich Arts Council and the Sandwich Council on Aging. She was a communicant of Corpus Christi Parish in East Sandwich.
Mom had a big heart, and her smile was genuine and uplifting. She took joy in each of her eight grandchildren and encouraged them in all their interests. She leaves her daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie (Paul Kirchhoff) of Virginia Beach, Kathy (Allen Pipkin) of South Portland, ME, Maureen (Don Ross) of Richmond, CA, and Sheila (John Saveson) of Northampton, MA, her grandchildren, Max and Kaeli Kirchhoff, Abi and Russell Pipkin, Sophia and Chloe Ross, Gretchen and Eben Saveson, many nieces and nephews, her brother, Paul Ares, sisters in laws Claire, Elaine, and Mary Ares, her friend since nursing school, Carol Demko, and close friend Ann Pipkin. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom, her parents, her brothers John and Roland, sister Bernadette, and her infant son.
Visitation with Lucille’s family will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd. Bourne, MA on Friday January 31, 2025, from 12-1pm, A Memorial Service will begin at 1pm, Followed by procession to Massachusetts National Cemetery.
