Marcia Joanne Mahoney

She was born in Springfield, MA on March 5, 1938, to Francis P Heddy and Thelma (Gemme) Heddy. She grew up in Stoughton, MA and graduated from Stoughton High School in 1955. Following high school she went to Forsyth Dental School in Boston, graduating in 1957. She worked as a dental hygienist for Dr Brickell in Stoughton where she met her future husband who had come in for dental cleaning.

Due to her husband’s work, moving was a frequent experience for her. With each move, she created a stable and loving home for her three children. She enjoyed making new friends and being involved in gardening clubs. After moving to Cape Cod, she worked for many years at the Barnstable County Retirement, retiring from there in 2000.

She was an avid reader and loved a good mystery book. She had a great love and respect for animals of all kinds. There was rarely a time when she didn’t have a dog in her life, many of whom were rescue dogs or a stray who needed a home. Even in her final weeks, she was still scanning the shelter sites looking for her next dog. Among her most memorable experiences was traveling twice to New York City with her daughters to see the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Over the years travel was a frequent activity. She traveled to Hawaii and San Francisco with her mother and brother, visiting Pearl Harbor and attending a luau. She traveled to Mongolia to visit her son and enjoyed learning about the culture and trekking in the countryside. A trip to Italy with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren was a highlight and one that she often spoke of. A “girls trip” with her daughters and granddaughter to Paris and a family reunion in the South of France were memorable experiences as well.

She will be greatly missed by her family who will always remember her great sense of humor. She is survived by her three children: Daniel (Otgonzaya) Mahoney of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Susan (James) Hurst of Chicago, Illinois, and Jeanne Hodge of Sandwich, MA, a brother Marc (Brandon) Heddy of Quincy, MA and her well loved cat, Amy. Survivors also include six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 2-5pm at Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, Rte 6A, Sandwich, MA on Saturday September 12th. A graveside service will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Grove Street, Sandwich, MA, where she will be laid to rest with her parents. The date and time of the graveside service to be announced shortly on the funeral home’s website.
