Those of us lucky enough to be part of her life knew how wickedly funny she was. She loved a good joke and shared her crazy sense of humor with her grandchildren, who said she was the coolest grandmother ever. She didn’t look or dress like a grandmother in her 70s. She dressed so stylishly that even her teenaged granddaughter often wore her clothes. Maria loved to tell a good story but her favorite ones involved her family, especially her three grandchildren who made her proud beyond words. She was ecstatic that she was going to become a great-grandmother this summer.
Maria lived most of her life in Sandwich, where her parents Arthur and Zulmida Bazzinotti also grew up. For almost 20 years, she spent part of each winter in Siesta Key, Florida, with her husband Billy, enjoying the beach and the warm weather and visiting her now deceased sister, Connie Cullen and her husband Jim. They use to make the trip with their dog Gizmo, who loved going there almost as much as they did.
Maria made many close friends at work (Riverview School, Colonial Gas and Air New England being where she spent most of her working career) who remember her as magical, kind, caring, wise and wonderful. She loved to knit and spend time with her knitting friends. Recipients of her scarves, sweaters and hats will always treasure those gifts.
Maria had a heart as big as the ocean and she knew how to make people feel good about themselves. She will be missed by so many, but especially her family, whom she loved and who loved her more than words could ever express. A hole is left in the hearts of husband Edward (Billy) Mulhern; daughter Kriston Welch and her husband David; grandson David Welch and his wife Anna; grandson Jakob Welch; granddaughter Isabella Welch; her nephews and their families, along with many other family members.
A visitation will be held on Friday April 23, 2021 at 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home 154 Route 6A Sandwich, MA followed by a graveside at 11:15 a.m. St. Peter's Cemetery.
