Ruth Chew

Ruth F. (Ford) Chew, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2013 at the age of 97 at the Newfield Nursing Home. Wife of the late Irving E. Chew, Jr; mother of Thomas I. Chew of Pembroke, and the late John L. Chew of Canton, Michigan.

Beloved grandmother of Thomas I. Chew Jr and wife Dawn of California, Robert A. Chew and wife Andrea of Raynham, Jonathan E. Chew and wife Kimberly of Norton, Arminda J. (Chew) Cook and husband Andrew of Avon and their mother Margaret Sheibley of Taunton; Dr. Christine M. Chew and partner Dawn of Pennsylvania, Susan E. (Chew) Putnam and husband William of Michigan and their mother Aldona Chew of Michigan; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Wallingford, CT, she was raised in Tarrytown, NY. She was a long time resident of Brockton and Sandwich. A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, she held a BS degree in Education from Framingham State Teachers College. For many years she taught Home Economics at South Junior High in Brockton, was an active member of the Warren Avenue Baptist Church and a Den Mother for Pack 4.

In retirement she and her husband traveled, were founding members of the Covenant Community Church in Lakewood Hills and were Matron and Patron of Sandwich Chapter No. 221 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Sandwich Women’s Club, the Thornton Burgess Society and was instrumental in helping to restore the Briar Patch Jam Kitchen. Ruth enjoyed flowers, crocheting, crafts, reading and sharing her profession with others thru consulting, lectures and organizing dinners for her various memberships.

A visitation period will be held on Thursday Oct 24 from 10-12 pm with a funeral home service at noon at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA. Burial will follow at the National Cemetery in Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Sandwich Chapter 221 of the Eastern Star, PO Box 18, Monument Beach, MA 02553 or Visiting Nurse Assoc of Cape Cod, 255 Independence Dr, Hyannis, MA 02601.
