Shirley grew up in West Barnstable and graduated from Barnstable High School in 1960. She met the love of her life, Richard Canning, Jr. in 1955 at a square dance in East Sandwich and they were together from that day on. They wed in 1963 after she finished her training at Wilfred Academy in Boston. In addition to being a gifted hair stylist, Shirley was an avid gardener, accomplished seamstress, master baker, talented painter and crafter.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Myron and Barbara Howland of Bradenton, FL. She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Canning, Jr of East Sandwich; her treasured children, Edward Canning (Kelley Sullivan) of Dennis, Craig Canning of Columbia, NH and Cheryl Canning Quast (Rick Quast) of West Barnstable; her cherished grandchildren, Ben, Cassandra, Katie, Kayla, Kevin, Bryce, Hannah, Jared, Ethan and Atlas; her precious great granddaughter, Natalie and her adored nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Lewis.
Shirley was a consummate hostess and her family and friends will always remember the warmth of her greetings and beauty of her parties. She will be missed dearly by all who were blessed enough to know and love her.
