Bob Erskine Nagel, 87, of Brookhaven GA, passed away on November 12th after a long battle with a chronic blood disease. Bob was preceded in death by his mom (Mona), father (Charles) and sister (Peggy Brehmer.)
Bob was born on June 30, 1932 in Memphis TN, though he spent his formative years in Chattanooga. He attended Auburn University (then known as API) where he played baseball for four years. Baseball was a theme that lasted throughout his life, as a spectator, as a coach to his sons and as a way to yell at the TV when the Braves were playing.
After graduating with a degree in textile engineering, Bob reported to Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton, FL to fulfill his ROTC obligation. He rose to become Chief of the Training Division, where his main responsibility was managing contract training courses focused on various aircraft systems, and he continued to play baseball.
After the Air Force, Bob joined Westinghouse and sold large industrial gear to many large companies including Dow and Nasa. He found his calling in sales and, after being promoted, moved to Pittsburgh, the headquarters. He soon learned he wasn’t made for the corporate boardroom and left Westinghouse and moved to Atlanta with his wife and young family to jump into the high growth area of real estate.
He began his commercial real estate career by assisting Crow, Pope and Carter in the development of a regional shopping center (Northlake Mall) and office park in metro Atlanta. Eventually, he formed Nagel & Company and became a broker.
Bob was a cornerstone of the industry in Atlanta from the ‘60s through the early 2000s where he focused on apartment land and finished apartment buildings. He loved it and was great at it. Bob was a man of character and diligence. He valued loyalty, hard work and delivering on your commitments. Bob loved his kids and friends. He was funny and never met a stranger.
Bob is survived by his ex-wife Helen Deasy and his children Rebecca, Tom and his wife Christina, Katherine, Robert and David and his wife Heidi and the nine grandkids. Bob lived a full and interesting life. We love you dad. Thanks for your leadership, effort and commitment to your family. Thank you Dr. Braunstein and blood donors for helping Bob enjoy a long fulfilling life.
