Alice was born on January 8th, 1936 in Accokeek, Maryland to Thomas Reid Cabe and Emma Ruth Callahan Cabe. She was the youngest of three children. She had one older sister, Barbara, and one older brother, Tom. She was born during the Depression years and the family struggled, but survived and later thrived. Both the Depression and the war years of World War II would have a lasting impact upon everyone in the family. One of the items Alice kept close to her, unbeknownst to the rest of us, were partially used war ration stamp booklets left over from World War II – a reminder, no doubt, of sacrifice, but also triumph.
As a youngster, Alice was athletic and enjoyed the outdoors and sports, in particular basketball. After graduating from Varina High School in 1954, she went on to study commercial art at Richmond Professional Institute, part of the College of William and Mary.
Upon graduation, Alice moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She was a very talented artist and excelled as a commercial graphic artist, working primarily in advertising. Between 1958 and 1961 she designed advertising for exacting companies such as Rich’s, JP Allen, Budweiser, and others. Later in the 1970s and 1980s, she did work for Sears, Ace Hardware, Six Flags, IBM, and many more.
On February 29, 1960, she met Jim Bridges at a Sadie Hawkins Day celebration. They were immediately smitten with each other and married on April 8, 1961. She went on to have two sons, Daniel Reid (Dan) and John Clinton (Clint).
Alice also was a dedicated volunteer in her community and served countless hours in various positions at St. Philip United Methodist Church, Bethany United Methodist Church, and in Cub Scout Pack 573, among other things.
Alice and Jim had a loving and happy marriage of 59 years. They were inseparable and their happiest moments were simply spending time together. Their relationship was an inspiration to all that saw it.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Reid and Emma, her sister, Barbara, her brother, Tom, and her loving husband, Jim. She is survived by her sons and spouses Dan (Carolyn Bridges) and Clint (Grace Bridges), and grandsons Reid, Sam, Owen, Andrew, Evan and Kian.
Services will be held at Arlington Memorial Park on June 26th, 2026 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bethany United Methodist Church in Smyrna, Georgia.
