Arrington “Bruiser” Crump, 84, of Portsmouth Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday June 9, 2018 at his home.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to James and Julia Crump, he lived most of his life in Portsmouth Virginia and relocated to Atlanta GA, in 2009. Arrington was passionate about family, his church, sports and NASCAR racing. He was a graduate of I. C. Norcom High School, where he played basketball, and football, and was inducted into the I. C. Norcom Hall of Fame for football. He also played recreational baseball and was even sought after by the Negro Baseball League. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a radioman for four years. Arrington then began his civilian career at the Norfolk Naval Air Rework Facility. Starting as an aircraft electrician, he progressed thru several positions of increasing responsibility and ended his career as a Supervisor of Methods and Standards. A vital member of his community, Arrington was always willing to lend a helping hand with projects whether big or small. He was a dedicated trustee of his home church, supporting numerous activities including men’s day programs, serving as an usher, helping with facility maintenance and much more. Full of a zest for life, he took pride in how he dressed, his conversations were witty, and his grandchildren thought he was the coolest Granddaddy or Pop, around.

Arrington is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Marguerite Carthella Churchill. They were married for 64 years. He is also survived by his son Daryll L. Crump (Sadell) and his daughter Lynn Crump Caine (John), his brothers James Crump (Joyce) and Stephen Crump (Alexis) and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his daughters Alice N. Crump, and Terri Crump. Arrington was a loving husband, father, and friend to everyone.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on June 30, 2018 at Emanuel AME Church on 637 North St, Portsmouth, VA 23704. Reverend Granger Flythe will be officiating. A repast will be held immediately following the service at Roger Brown’s restaurant located at 316 High St. Portsmouth VA, 23704. In lieu of flowers, should you desire, memorials may be made to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

I remember Arrington and my brother William (Bill) had such a great time when they were together. I remember how nice a person I thought Arrington to be. I am glad he was/is my cousin.

May the Lord bless and keep Carletha as well as the rest of the family in His care.

Condolences to Carthella, Jimmy, Steve, Lynn and Darryl. This outstanding citizen, veteran, husband, brother, uncle, father, cousin, friend and role-model will be missed. May he rest in eternal peace in heaven. My fondest memories of him are at the Crump Family Reunions. He always had a kind word to share, a friendly smile, and a helping hand. He taught me a lot of history about the family and always encouraged me to be the best person that I could be.

I am sending up much love and respect for Arrington Watson Crump. May memories of our loved one warm your hearts and inspire you, as you recover and find peace.

My condolences to our entire Crump Family. I really enjoyed as a young adult attending family reunions and seeing our older family matriarchs and patriarchs showing how a legacy is built through family and how it should be maintained. I really miss those older family members and the fun we use to have. R.I.P. your humor and wisdom will be truly missed.
