Beauchamp Coppedge Carr was born July 31, 1944 in Atlanta, GA, the youngest son of Anne Coppedge and Julian S. Carr, Sr. He passed on May 5, 2026. He attended The Westminster Schools and graduated from Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York. Beauchamp served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army in Saigon during Vietnam and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in History.
He returned to Atlanta and began a career in banking (then C&S Bank). As a central figure in the 1970’s “Save the Fox” campaign, Beauchamp left his banking career to help lead the effort that prevented the demolition of the historic theatre.
A devoted friend from his youth, “L.D.” Jones, ignited Beauchamp’s enthusiasm for The Fox Theatre, where he remained closely involved throughout his lifetime as a leader and its greatest fan. He spent 35 years at The Woodruff Arts Center (and its constituent institutions, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art, and Alliance Theatre), serving as Executive Vice President and leading its development efforts. His work helped secure long-term financial stability of one of our nation’s preeminent arts campuses.
In addition, Beauchamp was active in Leadership Atlanta, reflecting his broader commitment to civic engagement in the region. He was also among the most tenured members of The Atlanta Rotary Club as well as several other community boards throughout his lifetime. Beauchamp was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Beauchamp loved classical music and would break into song at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately, his enthusiasm for music was not matched by his vocal ability, a discrepancy he embraced with characteristic humor. A spirited shout of ‘Bravo!’ followed any performance he especially enjoyed.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jim Carr. Beauchamp is survived by his wife, Talela “Le” Newsom Carr; three children, John Carr (Virginia), Georgia Carr (Jeff Candrian) and Trevor Carr (Amy Mody); grandchildren, Owens Carr and Alistair Carr; brother, Julian S. Carr, III (Deryle); sister-in-law, Alice Carr; brother-in-law, Eddie Newsom (Julia); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The Carr family is most grateful for the remarkable support and friendship of Felix Manford, Alejandra Villanueva, Rev. Jethro Harden and other kind caregivers.
There will be a celebration of his life at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 2 o’clock with Rev. Rebekah Close LeMon and Norman Mackenzie officiating. Interment will be private at Westview Cemetery. Gifts in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Adele McKee Music Fund at Trinity Presbyterian Church or the Cherokee Garden Library, Atlanta History Center.
