Bessie Ngan Chan Lee Liu, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2019. Born the youngest of ten children of Lee Yan Ming and Lee Hung Heong in Hong Kong July 25, 1924 she survived the occupation of Hong Kong by the Japanese during World War II. She studied music (piano) at Combs College in Philadelphia where she met Andrew Liu whom she married in Hong Kong in 1952. She really enjoyed classical music and playing the piano upon returning to Hong Kong she taught music in middle school. After having two children – Lai Yuan and May Harn in Hong Kong, they immigrated to Mexico City where they had an additional two children – May Ling and May Ting. In 1972, she came to Atlanta and launched an import Chinese art goods store with Andrew. They specialized in wood stands for plates and lamps and featured Chinese porcelains. Bessie was a talented cook and enjoyed feeding all who entered her home. She enjoyed classical music and playing the piano. She was preceded in death by Andrew Wei Tung Liu her husband of 66 years, and is survived by Lai Yuan Liu (Linda), May Harn Liu, May Ling Liu, May Ting Liu and grandchildren Andrew, Alexander, Laura and Christina. Memorial services celebrating her life will be conducted on Saturday, the 26th of January at two o’clock at St. James United Methodist Church, 4400 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd., Atlanta. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception at the church.
