Charles Plaxico Owens passed away on December 12, 2018. He was born December 29, 1928, in Augusta, Georgia to Charles Calloway Owens and Nan Plaxico Owens. Charles graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in Augusta, Georgia, in 1946, and earned his Bachelor's of Science Degree from Georgia Tech in Industrial Management in 1951. Upon graduating from Georgia Tech, Charles joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado in 1952, where he served as a Product Processing Officer. He also served his country in Japan during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, Charles earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal. After returning from military service, Charles lived in Atlanta and worked as a mortgage loan officer for thirty years. During that time, he served as Treasurer and then President and Chief Executive Officer of the Southern Federal Savings and Loan Association of Georgia for ten years. Upon retirement in July of 1989, he became an active residential real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Buckhead Broker Realtors, where he worked for several years.
Charles was married twice. He lived in Buckhead with his first wife, Ruth Pittard Owens, and continued to be a loving stepfather to her two sons, Mike and Tommy Pittard, after her death in 1981. In 1985, Charles married Rosa Marie Litchfield and became stepfather to her three children, Julie, Bill, and Jessica. He was the step-grandfather of eight grandchildren and loved his family only second to God. Charles was a lifetime Methodist and taught an adult Sunday School class for many years. He was a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church at the time of his death.
He loved dogs and raised Beagles as a hobby. In fact, Charles loved all animals, even ones that some would consider pests, like raccoons and opossums. He loved Georgia Tech, and attended as many home football and basketball games as possible. Charles also had a strong love for the game of golf; he was the proud recipient of annual season tickets to The Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, and played golf at Druid Hills Golf Club on Saturdays for many years.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Ruth Owens Davis. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Marie Owens, his five step-children, and eight step-grandchildren: Kristine Lord, Stephen Pittard, Michelle Brown, Christopher Faulk, Olivia Faulk, Natalie Faulk, Andrew Hill, and Sarah Hill.
In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to The Methodist Children’s Home or Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
