We regret to announce the passing of Dr. Dar-Veig (David) Ho, age 94, of Peachtree Corners, GA, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Dar-Veig was a devoted husband; loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather; an enthusiastic learner; and a dedicated teacher.
Dar-Veig was born on January 3, 1931 to Chu-Kuo Ho and Chia Chen-Ching Ho near Beijing, China. After graduating from high school in Hangzhou, China, he studied at the National Taiwan University as a Civil Engineering major, graduating in 1953. Dar-Veig then attended the University of Tennessee and received a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. After graduation, he worked for a civil engineering consulting firm in Kansas City, MO.
Dar-Veig married Nancy Yi-Ying Jen in New York City on September 17, 1955. Their first child, Emily, was born in Kansas City, KS in 1956.
In September 1956, the family moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where Dar-Veig attended Brown University, graduating with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in June 1962. During this time in Providence, they had their second child, William, born in 1960.
After graduating from Brown University, Dar-Veig moved the family to Atlanta, GA in 1962 to teach mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Their youngest child, Elaine, was born in Atlanta in 1963. After Nancy’s passing in 1980, Dar-Veig married Rosalind Chung in 1981. He taught mathematics at Georgia Tech for 38 years, retiring in 2000 as the associate chair of the mathematics department. Dar-Veig celebrated his retirement with a family trip to China.
Dar-Veig was the son of Chu-Kuo Ho, an army general and commander-in-chief under Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. Being the son of a national hero built a foundation of strength and courage that Dar-Veig exemplified throughout his life.
Dar-Veig loved soccer, both as a player and youth coach. He had a fondness for cruises, which led to travels all over the world. Dar-Veig was an avid learner and a passionate teacher. He loved computer technology, number puzzles like Sudoku and Kakuro, mahjong and card games. Dar-Veig also had a love for music, especially classical and opera, and he built many of his own stereo systems including one of the first quadraphonic sound systems.
Dar-Veig is preceded in death by his parents Chu-Kuo and Chia Chen-Ching Ho, brother Dar-San Ho, wife Nancy Yi-Ying Jen, and baby daughter Ellen Ho. Dar-Veig is survived by his second wife, Rosalind, and by his three children, Emily Tilden (Mark), William Ho (Linda) and Elaine Johns (Peter); six grandchildren: Anthony Tilden (Heather), Andrew Tilden (Lauren), Carolyn Warner (Brett), Erica Freestone (Chase), Melissa Weinroth (David) and Billy Johns (Lauren); and seven great grandchildren: Logan Warner, Finn Tilden, Kate Warner, Faye Freestone, Ellie Tilden, Liam Weinroth and West Tilden.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to honor Dar-Veig be made to the Dr. Dar-Veig Ho Endowment Fund for the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech. (Georgia Tech Foundation, 760 Spring Street NW, Suite 400, Atlanta, GA 30308.)
