Doris Jean Lowndes was the youngest of eight children born to Clarence and Jessie America Thurman in Louisville, KY. She lived a full and wonderful life after a narrow escape from pneumonia as an eight-year-old child.
Doris Lowndes was married to Jack Prichard Lowndes for 67 years. As the wife of a Baptist preacher, Doris lived in different states including Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, New York, and Georgia. She and Jack retired in Dunwoody, GA in 1986 and enjoyed living in Dunwoody and hosting holidays at their home where they got to see their family.
Doris also loved to travel, and visited many places with Jack including Brazil, Cuba, Panama, Japan, and many countries in Europe. She got to practice her French in France, which was a trip that was one of her favorites. She also made frequent trips to visit her children’s families and got to attend important events like their weddings and graduations all over the United States.
Doris worked in real estate, started an extension Baptist Book Store, helped Jack with his ministries and was involved with Jack with the Lords Day Alliance. Doris was also active at the Dunwoody Baptist Church where she taught ESOL for many years and loved her students. She had a great sense of humor as evidenced by her constant and infectious smile. She loved to write and was a strong advocate for women’s rights.
She loved her family very much and was very loved by them as well.
Doris is survived by her children Jack Lowndes Jr., Stephen Lowndes, Barbara Lowndes, Carey Lowndes (Tracey), and Mary Ann Swanson (Ken).
