Elizabeth Williams McDonald, “Libba,” died peacefully in her 93rd year on August 14, 2026. She was born on July 5, 1933, in Augusta, GA, the first of three children born to parents Frances Elizabeth (Verdery) and James Booth Williams, Sr. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Louise Baker Williams, her brother, James Booth Williams Jr. and one son, Louis Franklin McDonald, Jr.

Growing up on Walton Street in Monroe, GA, Elizabeth attended Monroe Elementary, and graduated from Monroe High School where she was crowned Homecoming Queen her Senior Year. After High School she attended Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia where she graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

In the late 1950’s she met Louis Franklin McDonald Sr at Colonial Homes Apartments in Atlanta after he came calling to borrow a cup of sugar. They were married on Oct. 16, 1960 and enjoyed forty-eight years together until his passing in 2008.

“Miss Libba” treasured her time as a pre-school and kindergarten teacher at the Lovett School in Atlanta for 30 years. Beloved by all students, she kept in touch with many of them up until her passing. “Rise and Shine,” sung in her 1970’s preschool classrooms, became a cherished song, later sung in chapel services and still enjoyed by students and faculty today.

Libba is survived by her children, Jim (Carolyn); Sara (David); grandchildren Madeleine Gwendolyn McDonald, Martha Elizabeth Massey, Duncan Mitchell McDonald, Caroline Montague McDonald, Zachry David Massey III, Charles James McDonald, Thomas Roane McDonald; and extended family and friends who loved her dearly.

The family welcomes friends to attend a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Friday, August 21 at St Anne’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA, officiated by the Rev. Buddy Crawford. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lovett School or the charity of one’s choice.
